Being a source of advice and support in a student's scholarly journey. I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. I use learning styles that complement the student I am teaching, as opposed to a "one size fits all"…

Helping the student learn from our lessons. To have a positive impact on their learning, which is important for me to give a high quality experience of learning to them. Furthermore, a good guidance system from all aspects of the tutoring should be positive reinforcement for the students, to ensure that they maintain goodwill towards learning.…

The most important thing is to develop personalized learning strategies according to the individual needs of the student. This should be complemented by constant efforts to induce a two-way channel towards Education, augmenting traditional educational roles. Rather than mere transfer of academic knowledge, the tutor should encourage the student to…

I believe that communication is the most important thing when it comes to tutoring as setting goals and objectives that students are able to reach makes learning all the more fun. My strengths are that I’ve been apart of the tutoring community my whole life, so I know what it’s like to be tutored. I am also a very empathetic and extroverted…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is be a good role model. Show them good study techniques and a bright and attentive approach to study in general. I have a good academic background graduating with an atar of 95 and have gone to a lot of tutoring during my study days. I am able to explain concepts intricately as well as good…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and comfortable sharing their ideas and perspectives. Without that, students may feel intimidated or hesitant, which can hinder their ability to maximise their potential. As someone who recently graduated from high school, I believe I…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is ask the student what they want to get out of tutoring. Every student has different goals, and a good tutor recognises that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. By understanding those goals and regularly revisiting them, the tutor can tailor their teaching methods to suit the individual…

A tutor should be a supportive platform that can allow for the student to grow from and learn to work independantly and learn new skills and techniques. They should be friendly and understanding too. One of my strengths as a tutor is patience. I understand the need for being patient when explaining the methods of working out problems. Also having…

I believe building a strong, personal relationship with a student is very important. The more connected a student feels to the tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for the student to learn well. There are many teachers with knowledge, credentials and experience who can't convey that knowledge to students. I…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel more confident in entering exams and answering questions. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being an attentive and listening mentor, ready to help with any issues. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel empowered by realising that they are capable of achieving their goals in the classroom. I believe that this realisation comes about when they understand that at a young age especially, intelligence is not fixed but able to grow when they challenge themselves. I think this is…

Inside WaitaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Charli worked on calculating area and perimeter of rectangles, as well as revising types of angles using diagrams.

Year 10 student Angus tackled simultaneous equations and practised problems involving discounts and percentage increases.

For Year 11, Hannah focused on interpreting tax payable scenarios, then applied her understanding to questions about Medicare levies and simple interest calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 maths, one student frequently skipped writing out working for multi-step addition and subtraction, leading to missed carrying or borrowing—"she often misses adding the carried over number," noted a tutor.

In Year 7, another lost track of time during a statistics test, rushing through multiple choice without allocating enough minutes per question.

For a senior student in Year 10, difficulty reading long worded questions in financial maths meant key details were misunderstood, resulting in errors with net versus gross pay.

Confidence wavered after mistakes; at times, this caused hesitation to attempt similar problems again.

Recent Achievements

One Waitara tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who used to skip steps in simultaneous equations but now confidently writes out each line and checks their reasoning, especially after mastering the rise/run method for gradients.

In Year 9, another student has begun underlining key parts of questions—something she previously ignored—which is helping her accurately identify what's being asked before jumping into calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once hesitated with fractions is now finishing weekly homework without help and even explains how to convert mixed fractions into decimals during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hornsby Girls High School.
