I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to not just provide their students with an answer but to guide the student through the process. As the saying goes "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" helping a student understand the thought process helps them consolidate…

A tutor can bring positive changes to a student's behaviour and life. A great tutor can bring many inspirations to a student's life. A tutor can help students guide their future pathway for greater success in their life. A tutor can also build a strong mindset within a student. A tutor focuses on motivated learning rather than motivated…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help build/maintain self confidence as well as to incite a love of learning by awakening curiosity. Throughout the course of life, it is rather difficult to maintain self confidence due to the never ending competition we face. Having been on this journey myself, I believe that…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to ask questions that they never felt comfortable asking in front of their actual teachers. As a teacher, I believe that academic independence and curiosity are the greatest qualities I can give to them. I consider my patience a valuable asset as a tutor. I never…

Be patient. For some students it will take longer for them to gauge a topic compared to others. Ensuring that no student feels that theyre slow or “not up to it†is the worst possible situation. I think its also important for tutors to act as a mentor to students, not only helping them with the development of hard skills, but also with soft…

I think that a tutor is more than someone who teaches. A tutor is someone that students look up to, and go to for various pieces of advice ranging from educational to real world challenges. Having gone through life themselves, a tutor has the duty of providing their students with not only practical knowledge, but also equipping them with the…

If the student is not comrtable or does not trust you, how do you expect the student to learn from you. Connection and keeping a balance between play and friendliness…

Firstly, a tutor can be a mentor and build a good relationship with the student by making him/her comfortable. Secondly, the tutor should not spoon-feed the student, but rather, scaffold the learning experiences for him/her. This can be only achieved when the tutor provides appropriate feedback to the student by making him/her understand areas of…

I think that creating an environment where curiosity is rewarded is the most important thing, as this is what deepens love for a subject in students. By explaining concepts wholly and encouraging questions, students will want to learn the content completely instead of just memorising it, resulting in better academics. Alongside this, showing…

Inside WerribeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ryan revised probability and measurement concepts, focusing on interpreting sample spaces and comparing units of length.

For Year 10, Zara tackled solving simultaneous linear equations using both substitution and graphical methods, as well as exploring quadratic equations through factorisation and completing the square.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex worked through VCE General Maths practice questions involving univariate data analysis and normal distribution, using real data sets to interpret mean, median, and standard deviation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, one student relied heavily on a CAS calculator but did not bring a regular scientific calculator, making exam-style practice less effective. "Using CAS is helpful but it'd be great if Eli could bring a classic calculator next time," the tutor noted.

In Year 9 Mathematics, missed opportunities to consolidate earlier algebra skills meant that during sessions, concepts had to be re-explained from scratch—valuable lesson time was lost to reviewing basics instead of advancing.

A Year 3 learner's home revision focused mainly on familiar question types; as a result, confidence with new problem formats remained low and progress slowed in application tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Werribee tutoring session saw a Year 12 student finally start clarifying which orbital formulas to use in chemistry problems, rather than guessing and hoping for the best.

Another tutor noticed a Year 10 student, after weeks of hesitation, now openly asks questions when stuck on tricky algebra—she used to stay silent but is now quick to seek help and clear up confusion.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, Alice has begun identifying geometric shapes by name without prompting; just last month she'd wait for hints before answering. This week, she pointed out every triangle and rectangle in her worksheet all on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Manor Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wyndham Vale Primary School.
