I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster independent thinking. A tutor should help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills so they can tackle future challenges independently. Rather than just providing answers, I focus on guiding students to…

A tutor in my perspective must be flexible and must be willing to offer any form of support, I.e. helping solve problems, explain concepts in detail, clear misconceptions, etc. Also it is important always maintains a positive attitude and encourages students to learn more. I also think a tutor should be able to provide their students with the…

To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

A good tutor should be several things. They are an accountability partner, a mentor in the area the student wishes to improve in, and they are also a source of inspiration for the student. Doing a couple questions in the lesson but not finishing the rest of the homework is not good enough. It is a huge success for a tutor to be able to encourage…

Ease their anxiety. Time spent on understanding. (Process is more important than the result) Giving them the tools to fish than rather the fish itself. Showing them stress doesn’t solve problems, making an effort does. There is nothing you can’t do. One day these things will help you. Make them realise their potential. Patience…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is to provide individualised instruction, as well as a safe and non-judgemental learning environment to student, something that they may not be able to obtain in a normal big-size class with limited time to teach an increasingly information-heavy curriculum. I have been tutoring students…

A tutor should help students build confidence in their abilities. This involves providing encouragement, positive reinforcement, and constructive feedback to help students recognize their strengths and overcome challenges. As a tutor, I believe my strengths lie in several key areas: 1. Effective Communication: I can explain complex concepts in…

Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. Tutors can help a student in one or many subjects depending upon the child’s needs and the tutor’s expertise. "My strength is my…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is serve as a secondary teacher/mentor to a school teacher. As school teachers have to focus on a large class (usually around 30 students), they are unable to address the needs of each student. As each student has their own struggles and needs, an exterior tutor provides…

Help them gain a thorough understanding of concepts that they are incapable of doing alone, I want the student to understand that academic marks is not what we are trying to achieve but more of the effort and interest that they put in the subject which will lead towards success a process that needs to be taken instead of chasing the 90 + target…

You can inspire a student and make him independent. The goal of a teacher (ironically) is to make himself redundant. Being able to develop self-learning skills and teaching oneself by asking right questions is the key process of learning. Eventually, you can master the art of learning itself and you don't need a teacher. I can be very friendly and…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student involve making the student understand the concepts at a deep level, rather than tutoring them solely for the purpose of achieving higher grades. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand. Memorising content is useful, but without understanding, the brain soon discards it as unimportant. Understanding allows students to see the bigger picture and how concepts tie together. Memorising forces students into a box, where questions outside of what they’ve…

A tutor must be able to give a student the confidence to do well in their studies. For me I believe that motivating a student to do well in their studies will build a solid foundation of hard work, which is one of the most essential skills to have. Inside WestmeadTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on mastering long division and practiced rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.

In Year 7, Emily focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, tackling lots of practice questions to build confidence with these essential skills.

For Year 9, Jason reviewed algebra by practicing rearranging equations and expanding brackets, helping solidify his understanding for upcoming classwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, skipping careful checks during long division led to persistent calculation errors; as noted, "she needs to slow down and double check each step."

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided homework or completed it without effort—one session's work was "all incorrect" due to not reading instructions.

In Year 11 algebra, over-reliance on following memorised steps rather than understanding why those steps worked caused confusion when tackling new problem types.

For a Year 4 student, untidy written work made it hard to track mistakes and fix them, especially in times tables tasks. Missed homework and rushed presentation left key misunderstandings unresolved.

Recent Achievements

One Westmead tutor noticed a Year 8 student who used to avoid speaking up is now actively seeking clarification whenever she gets stuck, making it much easier to pinpoint misunderstandings early.

In a recent high school session, another student who'd struggled with algebraic expansion and factorisation was able to work through several challenging problems without needing step-by-step prompts—last term, he'd freeze at the first sign of difficulty.

Meanwhile, a younger learner in Year 4 made a leap by recalling all her times tables during practice, something she previously hesitated to attempt out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parramatta Marist High School.
