I consider building confidence in a student highly important when tutoring. In my experience as a teacher, students often value one on one teaching where available. Being able to focus on one student and their needs within their own education, builds a more confident student whether in their work, or when seeking assistance from teachers. Building…

believe the most crucial aspects of tutoring involve tailoring my approach to meet the specific needs of each student. Firstly, it's essential to identify their strengths and weaknesses to create a customized learning plan. This may involve adapting my teaching style, introducing alternative resources, or providing additional practice in areas…

In my personal opinion besides teaching a student what is in the unit/study guide, a tutor should be taking responsibility in creating a fun learning environment and encouraging and motivating the students to be confident. This would help to enhance the students performance. The strength I have as an individual is I am able to create a comfortable…

Tutors are someone students can rely on for academic assistance. I recognise that the role of tutors is to aid students in their educational pathways and help students in realising their true academic capabilities, constantly providing constructive feedback for areas of improvement. It is also important to have understanding as the VCE process is…

I believe the most important facet of tutoring students is learning to empathise with them to gain their unique perspective. This is important because it enables the tutor to be critical of their existing teaching habits, to revise their strategies and be adaptable to suit the needs of the student. Simultaneously, I believe it is crucial to match…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be reliable and on time, understand the way in which they learn, whether it is visually or through detailed descriptions and providing the skills on how to get to an answer rather simply giving a student the answer. I believe the most valuable tutors to students are those that are able to place themselves in the minds of their students. If I was a 15 year old beginning to learn the basics of calculus for example, I would consider which fundamentals they must first learn to gain a solid and sound foundation before moving onto more difficult components. I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is , in my opinion, recognize that each student is unique and has different learning styles, strengths and weaknesses. The most important role as a tutor is to give students confidence in their knowledge and ability. In my personal opinion, objectively high grades (e.g. 80% or more) should not be placed with as high importance as most people tend to do. I believe that if a student understands the content on a level that allows them to make connections or provide…

I do NOT believe in spoon feeding. Most important is self - discipline and consistency. To built the habit of self-believing and working hard can be beneficial for a student its life! Learning is a life time process - so educating students to think out of the box, questioning, reasoning and working hard to find their ways are some key elements a…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen to them and work with them, not at them. Tutoring for me is not just about regurgitating the same things as their classroom teacher, especially if it is a student who is struggling and the classroom approach is not working for them. I tutor in a way to make the student…

An important thing would be to instil a sense of confidence in a student about a particular subject, theory, or whatever it is that they are struggling with. Without confidence, even if a student may know the content or understand the theory, it can be difficult to do well in that subject. This is achieved by repeating a concept or practising it a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand their individual learning method and cater their lessons to suit. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build not only a survey-able understanding of the topic, but hopefully a genuine interest and passion. This might not be realistic 100% of the time, but creating actual curiosity and interest beyond just completing work out of necessity can not only be highly rewarding for the student but will…

A tutor apart from offering services of tutorship has a huge impact a student's life in the following ways: 1. Encourage students to apply his/her independent mind and motivate them to think out of the box. 2. Go out of the way in exploring different options to teach the same course/study material. 3. Be available for your students and…

A tutor is a role model and a figure for their students and it plays an important role to know them well. As a teacher role, it is important to remember being flexible, kind, gentle, and patience towards the child that we are teaching. Therefore, a child can get connected with the tutor and they learn at a faster rate. My biggest strength is that…

Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
