I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them towards the answer, in a way that allows the student to fully understand a concept rather than just solve a specific question. The ultimate goal would be for the students to develop the confidence, ability and skills to solve problems on their own. So actually, the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to assist them to find their method of learning and to foster their ability of independent and critical thinking. As I believe every kids learn best at their own method, I prioritise my student's preference and feedback on which way of learning they understands best. Moreover, I…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. It is important for them to engage in active learning rather than just listening to a teacher speak passively. I find that I can relate to students on a personal level and connect with them through pop culture and references, strengthening…

Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

Aside from helping a student work on topics they might otherwise struggle with, the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe that they can succeed in the topics or subjects they struggle with. I make it a point to never pass judgment on another student or make them feel bad about themselves because they are stuck on a topic,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable and inculcate a 'can do' attitude. Make sure that they understand that if they put their mind to it, anything is possible and go along with them on that journey. I'm a 21yr old post graduate student. This puts me in roughly the same generation as the students. I…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

The first thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to understand their difficulties and to set up a learning plan that is personalized and helpful. Lessons should give plenty of opportunities for students to test their knowledge as well as focusing on any grey areas by explaining any difficult concepts again. The second thing and perhaps…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. The most important thing a tutor can do is truly understand their student—how they think, what motivates them, and where they struggle. A tutor should be more than just an instructor; they should be a mentor and a guide, making learning feel approachable and even enjoyable. It’s not just about explaining concepts but also about building…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. Inside Williamstown NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sophia focused on algebraic expansion and factorisation, as well as solving equations using substitution.

Year 10 student Marcus worked through sketching straight line graphs and determining x- and y-intercepts from equations.

For Year 11, Emily tackled differentiation basics and applied these skills to maximum and minimum problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Methods, a student was asked to finish all questions and send them by email, but the work remained incomplete—meaning gaps in problem-solving practice before assessments.

Another student in Year 8, as noted, "needs to do more problems about factorization," yet homework tasks weren't consistently finished or reviewed.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, reliance on calculators surfaced: one lesson flagged that matrix calculations should be revised by hand to truly grasp underlying methods. These moments meant missed chances for feedback and left key skills underdeveloped ahead of major exams.

Recent Achievements

One Williamstown North tutor noticed a Year 11 student who had struggled with graphing trigonometric functions now confidently tackling both sine and cosine graphs, even volunteering to try tangent graphs without prompting.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to ask for help, took the initiative this week to explain which parts of her homework she didn't understand—then worked through those sections until she could solve similar problems independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, a student who once rushed through answers has started checking his calculations carefully and finished all ten workbook questions with no mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newport Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Australian Islamic Centre College.
