The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a platform that naturally promotes their own learning. A tutor must be able to nurture the student's understanding whilst not overpowering them. Asking questions to the student is a great way of doing this. Being nurturing allows the student to gain confidence in themselves which will…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is never let them lose their confidence and motivation. Before assessments most students are their worst enemy, stressing themselves out to the point in which they forget everything they have learned. I too have done this and know it comes from a lack of confidence. Therefore, it is…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to express their own opinion and be confident in themselves. A tutor should be able to provide a different perspective for the students they are teaching. I feel my strengths as a tutor would be that I can easily relate to students as I only finished school a few years ago and am still studying in university, so I understand some of the struggles relating to motivation and understanding difficult…

I am confident that an ability to find a right way to deliver an imformation is the best thing a true tutor can do. It is always important to remember that every student is different and therefore a study approach has to be different as well. As I tutor, I am an excellent communicator, which allows me to find a right way to educate other students…

For me, connection and knowledge are the most important thing you can provide for a student. Students will never learn if you are only "teaching" a student, but you also have to understand them by making a connection so you can strategies their learning style. I believe that tutors can offer a unique perspective that cannot be expected from a professional teacher. Consisting mostly of undergraduate and postgraduate students, most tutors would still have the memories of high school fresh in their minds. Therefore, students would understand on a personal level the sort of challenges that a student might…

Being present and active. I think being on your phone or doing something else while teaching the student makes it a negative experience for them as they may feel invalidated or that their needs aren't a priority. It is extremely important for the student to feel comfortable around me so that they engage in the learning journey. Here, they'd feel okay to ask questions and take in the information more easily. Inside Wynnum WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sam practised multi-digit multiplication and addition in word problems, and used diagrams to draw nets for prisms and pyramids.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through calculating compound interest with the standard formula and revised index laws.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Grace focused on applying quadratic equations to solve for roots of polynomials and began simple differentiation as it relates to physics motion questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often left homework incomplete and relied heavily on prompts during sessions, with the tutor noting, "he prefers I go through questions with him right away instead of attempting them solo."

In Year 11 Physics, difficulty plotting neat graphs online made it hard to interpret results—messy formatting blurred his thinking for both himself and the marker.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student rarely planned written tasks, leading to half-finished paragraphs and unclear ideas in English assignments.

During a senior session, one learner's uncharged laptop meant lost lesson time; forgotten materials and disorganization regularly interrupted progress.

Recent Achievements

In a Wynnum West tutoring session, one high school student began to check his answers independently, moving away from relying on the tutor's prompts. He now double-checks by substituting solutions back into equations before moving forward.

Another older student, who previously hesitated to speak up when confused, is now actively asking questions mid-lesson and clarifying difficult concepts out loud instead of shutting down.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently started to do basic arithmetic unaided; after learning a new concept once, she could practise it independently with no need for repeated explanation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wynnum Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wynnum West State School.
