The most important things a tutor can do are to build confidence by helping students believe in their own abilities, create clarity by breaking complex ideas into simple and understandable steps, and provide steady support through…

A tutor needs to be apt at recognising where a student is at and how they learn, and able to accomodate for a students needs accordingly. They also need to be supportive and encouraging, providing constructive criticism where needed whilst also recognising the students progression and achievements. My biggest strength is my patience and empathy,…

My main purpose is to ensure that the student not only finds the subject enjoyable but also develops a true passion for it. Mathematics, in particular, holds a special place in my heart as it is a subject that I find incredibly wonderful and captivating. I love math and I enjoy teaching it to others. The most important thing is the students. They are the priority as a tutor. Helping them to understand what they learning is vital, and working to their abilities, not necessarily a schedule. Some students work fast and are fast learners, and others need a bit more explaining. It is important to understand this as a tutor, so that the student gets…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build understanding, confidence, and independence. Beyond helping with specific assignments or topics, a tutor should help students develop strong problem-solving and study skills they can use on their own. It’s important for a tutor to meet students at their current level, identify gaps…

Ensure that all activities encourage critical thinking, being neither too difficult nor too easy for the students, thereby aiding in the progression of learning and skill development. I am currently studying to become a primary school teacher and have completed three placements in primary school settings (in years 2, 4, and 5). I am confident in…

I consider confidence to be the most important thing I can give to a student as I believe every student has the capability of doing well in any subject, but belief in themselves is needed. Upon starting year 11, I really struggled at chemistry, majorly. But thankfully I had the best tutor that pushed me and gave me the drive & self-belief to…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is ensure that the information and skills being taught are useful to the student. To be able to identify the areas of which a student is having a hard time and adapt their way of teaching. Understanding that the students learning is the number one priority when teaching and that…

Firstly identifying the student's various strengths and areas of improvement is very significant to give a general idea of which topics to focus/skills on the most whilst teaching them. Another key area that a tutor should investigate further is the student's most effective way of learning specific concepts e.g. visual, written, auditory etc. A …

Not only help them improve their grades, but seeing my neighbour's grandson with his tutor I can see that it's a social interaction that he is dire need of, if he wasn't appointed a mentor to take him out and about and the Pokemon GO walks we go on sometimes, the kid wouldn't leave the house. The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient with the individual and try to explain concepts in a way that doesn't feel foreign. It is important to link concepts with relatable ideas or hobbies the student may have so they can grasp them better. Patience is required because everybody learns at different paces, meaning it is not uniform. A…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to give the student a chance to learn according to their own skills. Whilst school classes are integral, often students may get lost or left behind as the curriculum advances. Without the individual attention of a tutor they may have lingering gaps in their education and understanding that go…

I think what is most important for a tutor to do for a student is to be flexible. They need to be able to problem solve on the spot, helping their learner to understand concepts in different ways to adapt to their learning style. This flexibility needs to be across all aspects of the tutoring experience including being flexible to the learners…

Inside Yellow RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack focused on measurement by finding perimeter and area, then practised converting units for volume.

In Year 8, Alexia worked through simplifying algebraic equations and multiplying/dividing them using worksheets to prepare for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackled financial maths by calculating tax and Medicare levy as well as working out taxable income and tax refunds directly from exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student repeatedly avoided writing full working for financial maths problems—when asked about a tricky tax calculation, she said, "I just tried to remember the answer," which led to confusion with taxable income and Medicare levy steps.

A Year 9 student often revised only familiar algebra topics, neglecting indices and sign conventions; this caused mistakes to resurface in classwork.

In Year 7, revision notes were left incomplete after lessons on perimeter and area of composite shapes, making it difficult to connect new formulae later. The result: time spent relearning basics instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Yellow Rock recently noticed Isabelle, a high school student, making a real shift in her approach to exam prep—she now works through difficult problems independently, whereas she previously hesitated and needed step-by-step guidance.

In another session, Tariq finally began calculating unknown sides unprompted using Pythagoras' Theorem, marking a big leap from earlier sessions where he relied heavily on hints.

Meanwhile, Lillian in primary school has started spelling all her weekly words correctly for the first time this term and even explained her science project with newfound enthusiasm.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blue Mountains Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Winmalee High School.
