I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is give students space and time to develop their own way of thinking, rather than forcing them to follow a strict curriculum or systematic approach. This helps them build independent problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of concepts. My strength as a tutor is incorporating educational…

A tutor can make the student love to learn new things. A tutor can make life easier for a student by showing him/her that acquiring knowledge is very beneficial and important for prospering in life later on. I can explain my ideas in a really easy way. I am very patient as I can repeat the lesson several times until the student understands. I have…

In my opinion understanding each students learning preferences is very important. Every student has their own unique method of learning. My job is to understand their strengths and weakness and adjust my teaching style according to their needs. I am extremely patient with students and this is a skill that I have developed over the past few years…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

Listen and teach for the student. If you can't teach in a new way for that student, and you can't recognise that you might not be teaching them in the best way for them, you will most likely fail as a tutor I listen and learn and teach specific to the student. I am patient and I will explore multiple pathways of teaching to ensure the student is…

The tutor must be patient and approachable. He/she should make sure that the student should be able to understand the lesson and perform well in class. I am patient and kind. I prepare my own materials for the lessons. I also make mock up quizzes and exams. I am creative in making them understand the lesson like relating the subject to the normal…

I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

Do not try to impose the thought that he believes the correct solution and try to explain to the student how to arrive at the reasoning that gives the answer. A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. The most important thing would be to be able to empathise with the student and be not just a tutor but also a mentor. Rosie is tutoring my child in year 7 maths and has built up a great rapport with her. Through my observations I can see that Rosie has a strong understanding of maths and is able to explain ideas and concepts very easily. She has a lot of patience and always checks my daughters understanding and offers alternative explanations where needed. Rosie is always punctual, friendly and polite and I am very happy with the progress that has been made to date.

Inside ZetlandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student William worked on correcting homework covering simple interest and surds, along with catching up missed class content.

For Year 9, revision with Ben focused on dividing and multiplying fractions as well as tackling negative and fractional indices in surds.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Xavier practised converting remainders into decimals, solved word problems, and labelled different types of triangles using diagrams to support understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student left several steps unwritten when tackling algebraic equations, as one tutor noted: "he tried to do everything in his head instead of writing it down." This led to confusion over signs and made errors harder to spot.

In Year 11, incomplete homework meant that basic perfect square practice was missed, so extra time had to be spent revisiting foundational rules rather than progressing.

Meanwhile, a primary student working on division often forgot her materials at home, causing delays while searching for worksheets and slowing the start of each session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Zetland noted that William, a Year 10 student, has started attempting every maths question instead of skipping the tough ones—a real shift from earlier sessions when he'd often give up if stuck.

In Year 11, after struggling with surd problems last term, he was able to recall the steps and solve similar questions independently this week, using his own notes for support.

Meanwhile, Elliott (Year 5) used to stay quiet during lessons but now openly talks through his reasoning on each English question and even asks for extra examples when something feels tricky. Last session, he wrote down all his ideas without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Green Square Public School.
