I think the greatest gift a tutor can provide to a student is support. School can often be an isolating and intimidating experience, and often students, despite being remarkably talented, feel afraid to take risks and go beyond what is expected of them. A tutor can also make the learning experience far more rewarding and enjoyable. Students feel…

Tutoring can be challenging, especially when it comes to motivating your learner. You see the potential they have, and they often hear about the potential they have, but they do not feel as though they got what it takes. Living in such a busy and demanding time can often make us feel the time constraints on everything we do and we expect our…

As a tutor cannot take exams or do homework for the student, the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have faith in the student's ability and assist the student in every way possible to ensure that the student has faith in their own ability to achieve their goals. Patience, passion and empathy. Patience as it takes time to…

I believe as a tutor, the most important thing is to pass on crucial skills. Tutoring lessons involve not only achieving the best academic results but also learn crucial skills that can be applied by the student in many aspects. I believe effective and open communication is a strength for me as a tutor. I can understand the needs of the student…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

Being patient, understanding and ensuring that the tutor is in no way condescending towards the student. Going above and beyond for students, as well as being able to connect with them on their level Throughout my degree, we've been taught how to relay information to various audiences. Being able to explain concepts age-appropriately is definitely…

Using a tailored learning program for all abilities and expectations, and an unfailing growth mindset, a tutor should provide students with a love of learning that leads to internal fulfillment and a virtuous cycle where concepts are pursued willingly, and thus, more thoroughly. However, a tutor is not only a teacher, but a mentor; they should…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be adaptable and understanding to each student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. That requires building a students skills to not only understand the techniques which can be used but also how to most effectively apply them. This is particularly important as it enables students to become…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student in my opinion is to give them guidance on how to be successful in the subject we tutor. At the end of the day we only see them once or twice a week. We can't teach them everything. So it is important that we guide them on how to learn and study in order to be successful. Myt strength lies…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a student if…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and personable with the student. Tutoring is very different from a school environment, in that the benefits that exist are going at a pace that is suitable to the student's needs. Tutors are understanding and can target specific difficulties in a student's learning. We also not only identify…

I think some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student involve listening and understanding where they're really struggling to be able to help them effectively. I believe a tutor can offer a student so much more that just knowledge; the encouragement of a tutor can unlock a student’s potential and lead them towards consistent success. Tutoring sessions can make a student feel heard and understood which is so important in a student’s journey through self discovery in their schooling years. As a tutor,…

The process of getting a tutor was very simple and the services are very flexible. The payment options on line are very simple as well. Our tutor, James is extremely flexible with times and days which has worked really well. Initially we signed up for weekly slots then moving to fortnightly with extra lessons if needed. James has worked wonders with Sarah's progress in Maths and she is doing really well with the support of James who is a gem and have such confidence in. It's being a big success and we are thankful for the services. Kind Regards Iain and Laura Cooper

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Rose focused on multiplying and dividing with the column method, practiced rounding larger numbers up to the millions, and explored classifying angles and triangles using diagrams.

For Year 9, Chloe tackled surface area of prisms and composite shapes, then applied these skills in worded problem contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan revised applications of derivatives and looked ahead at stationary points, working through example problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often relied on checking answers with the tutor after every maths question, revealing low confidence even when their calculations were correct; as one note said, "she checks with me each question—most of the time the answer is correct."

In a senior Standard Maths session, another student struggled to keep up with new content due to missing earlier work and found it difficult to dedicate time to catching up.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner faced exam pressure, rushing through working and making small mistakes that cost marks.

Missed assignments or incomplete homework were also noted in several cases.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on memorising rules now confidently explains her steps for solving trigonometry questions, especially with SOHCAHTOA, and can tackle worded problems that stumped her last term.

In Year 7 English, a student who struggled to express ideas has started using the P.E.E. structure when writing about texts and can now justify how she arrived at her answers—something she hesitated to do before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from frequent errors in rounding numbers to consistently rounding up correctly when needed and completed her six times tables worksheet with perfect accuracy by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
