I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do is help the student understand a topic. This may sound intuitive however it is often majorly overlooked and replaced with acceptance or shear memorisation for the student. What I want is for my students is a true understanding of the subject, giving them the tools of learning so that they…

I think the most important things an english tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence through making them feeling supported. It’s about creating a space where they’re not afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. I also try to make things clear and easy to understand, and I always encourage kids to believe in themselves and push…

I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing an english tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not…

The tutor must understand the student. Some students try really hard to learn but may fail to show successful results. The tutor must understand this, assure the student that he/she is making progress, and guide the student every inch of the way. Second, the tutor must consider the pursuits of the students as his/her own personal endeavor as…

A tutor should have good listening skills so that they will better understand students' misconceptions and struggles. It is important to treat each student and how you go about emphasising the content to the students uniquely. A good tutor should aim to be relatable and open to share own experiences with learning and highlight that it isn't an…

The most important things an english tutor can do for a student is build confidence and spark an interest for learning. I would do this by encouraging a growth mindset and applying school concepts to the real world to show students that school learning does relate to the real world and doesn't just remain in the books. This is something I…

In the primary grades, children learn by absorbing everything in their surrounding. As an english tutor, it's important to be an ideal role-model for the child, so that they can achieve not only academic excellence, but also personal growth. I am patient, organised, hard working and driven. While tutoring kids in the primary grades, it can be…

I think it is very important as an english tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. That is going to boost up the student's confidence on the subject. I can not stress enough about the importance of building confidence in a student. I am very patient with my students…

Tutors must build the confidence of their students - they can't just teach them the content and expect them to be able to do it on their own - its more than that. A good tutor needs to build the childs confidence so they know they can answer a question. I can do this, I am the type of tutor that wants to support students to do their best and to…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas an english tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with…

Every student has a different starting point and pace, and as tutors, we need to understand this and accommodate for each student. Allow the student to make mistakes and correct those mistakes. Explain to the student that mistakes are a part of learning. Do not criticise but suggest improvements. Patience to deal with students at different levels is needed to tutor. Also, sufficient knowledge of the subject being tutored is necessary to tutor and to make the student confident…

Local Reviews

The process of getting a tutor was very simple and the services are very flexible. The payment options on line are very simple as well. Our tutor, James is extremely flexible with times and days which has worked really well. Initially we signed up for weekly slots then moving to fortnightly with extra lessons if needed. James has worked wonders with Sarah's progress in Maths and she is doing really well with the support of James who is a gem and have such confidence in. It's being a big success and we are thankful for the services. Kind Regards Iain and Laura Cooper

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Rose focused on multiplying and dividing with the column method, practiced rounding larger numbers up to the millions, and explored classifying angles and triangles using diagrams.

For Year 9, Chloe tackled surface area of prisms and composite shapes, then applied these skills in worded problem contexts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan revised applications of derivatives and looked ahead at stationary points, working through example problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often relied on checking answers with the tutor after every maths question, revealing low confidence even when their calculations were correct; as one note said, "she checks with me each question—most of the time the answer is correct."

In a senior Standard Maths session, another student struggled to keep up with new content due to missing earlier work and found it difficult to dedicate time to catching up.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner faced exam pressure, rushing through working and making small mistakes that cost marks.

Missed assignments or incomplete homework were also noted in several cases.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on memorising rules now confidently explains her steps for solving trigonometry questions, especially with SOHCAHTOA, and can tackle worded problems that stumped her last term.

In Year 7 English, a student who struggled to express ideas has started using the P.E.E. structure when writing about texts and can now justify how she arrived at her answers—something she hesitated to do before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student moved from frequent errors in rounding numbers to consistently rounding up correctly when needed and completed her six times tables worksheet with perfect accuracy by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
