In my opinion, an english tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is remind them that they are smart, important and capable. Teaching a student content and contributing to their educational developmental is an essential part of tutoring, but it is not all tutoring is. Being optimistic, clearly articulated and organised is highly important for ensuring that the student is in an environment in which they can learn. I also believe that providing solid study advice to take home ensures that anything gained within a session is built upon at home. My teaching style is very student focused. I assess how the student…

I think the key to make tutoring efficient is helping the student see and realize how much they're capable of, giving them a sense of empowerment so that they believe in themselves. Another important aspect is always seeking for different methods that will fit the student and finding ways of making concepts interesting for them. My ability to…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

The most important thing an english tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for an english tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is have the wisdom to be able to solve the problems which they cannot. Because if a tutor can't even do this, then everything else is pretty much irrelevant. Furthermore, having the ability to explain concepts is also very important as you can't be a great tutor if you can't explain…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the tools to be able to confidently work through academic problems on their own. In an English context this can mean teaching a student how to deconstruct what is required by a question, or giving them the skills to analyse a text for thematic and…

I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is listen patiently to the student, guide them in the right direction, build trust, encourage, and support to drive to excellence. Tanya Connor, Abbotsford

Inside AbbotsfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as mastering times tables from 2 to 10 through targeted worksheets.

For Year 8, Emily worked through solving and simplifying algebraic equations, including factorisation, using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James reviewed quadratic functions by practising graphing techniques and applying the quadratic formula to solve a range of problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student often skipped crucial steps when multiplying inequalities by negatives, leading to persistent sign errors—"she needs to practice translating English sentences into equations," a tutor noted.

For a Year 9 student, rushing through algebraic fractions without careful layout caused repeated mistakes and slowed progress.

In Year 10 English, a student struggled with structuring essays logically; missing deadlines and incomplete homework compounded this issue.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, reliance on memorisation without practicing tables (7–9) meant slow recall during timed drills, leaving her frustrated as others finished ahead.

Recent Achievements

One Abbotsford tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to leave assignments unfinished but now self-assigns tasks before assessments and works through them independently.

In English, a Year 12 student has become much more confident at forming positions and backing them up with clear reasoning—she recently articulated how Rear Window both depicts and subverts 1950s gender roles, something she'd hesitated to discuss before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously made frequent mistakes in times tables just completed all the tricky ones—including the 13s and 14s—with barely any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Collingwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sophia Mundi Steiner School.
