Priority is to solve their problems. HOWEVER, the most important thing is to intrigue them with knowledge. I know people can be intimidated by math, so did I; but all they need is someone to help them realize the magic math brings to life. Besides academic stuff, I am good with people. I'm totally the opposite of boring. I smile a lot. I've…

Sometimes it is important to take a step or two backwards in that case and often that results in a quicker grasp of current concepts. I feel a tutor can help the student by personalizing the learning according to the needs of the student by incorporating connections to the students' interests. A tutor must teach to the student's strengths and minimize the student's weaknesses. Tutors should…

A good tutor will be patient as well as a good listener. Addressing the students' queries, errors with honesty yet with empathy. A good tutor should be willing to be dynamic in their teaching style, so as to engage the learners. Additionally, a tutor should be willing to share their own experiences and draw parallels with their students. I…

In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the most, is…

Be able to establish rapport and trust. Being a good listen as a mentor is very important. A tutor student relationship should be viewed as a partnership. Teaching them the curriculum and making them score higher is not alone enough making them realize what they are capable of. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence and help them believe in their ability to improve. Zacharo, Albert Park

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
