One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

Establish their confidence to solve the questions independently. That doesn't mean you don't help when they are stuck. I will provide time for my students to try before I go through the questions under time limit. I have a solid understanding of the Yr11 and 12 maths knowledge. I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

I believe that the tutor's ability to provide multiple scenarios and perspectives when approaching difficult concepts to allow for a diverse understanding and strong base knowledge is extremely important for a student. A tutor should also be able to understand if a student is struggling and be able to help and guide them with patience so the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be for a student is patience. Everyone works and learns on different levels and it is up to the tutor to make the learning of the subject fun and enjoyable. My biggest strengths when tutoring are my passion for the subjects I talk about, and most importantly being calm and patient to those I…

Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do is understand the problems a particular student is facing. Each student might have a different way of thinking and different problems. The tutor needs to figure out the best method for the student so that s/he can learn the most. The tutor needs to clearly explain the concepts and then needs to ensure that…

Giving a student the time and attention they need to ensure they can fully understand difficult concepts. The most important thing is to fully understand the doubts of the student and their lack of understanding in different areas of a subject. It is then necessary to device a personalised plan of action for that student, to strengthen those concepts and help them gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. The most important things that one can do for a student is make the learning material relatable to them. Which means that giving real world examples and relating the material to something of importance. For me, it is not the academic help that is most important, but the ability to give the student a place where they can comfortably express their struggles in school. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build independence. It's not just about teaching them the material it’s about empowering them to think for themselves and solve problems on their own. By encouraging self-reliance and critical thinking, I aim to give students the tools they need to succeed long after our…

Inside Albert ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Eliza focused on right-angled triangle trigonometry, using sine, cosine, and tangent to find unknown sides and angles, and practised interpreting worded problems involving true bearings.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through quadratic equations by completing the square and factorisation in preparation for a test, as well as reviewing the expansion of quadratics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled logarithms—covering concepts and worksheet practice—before moving on to applications of differentiation for polynomials.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a statistics assignment sometimes left analysis sections unfinished or only in dot points, as noted: "Convert dot point ideas into sentences & paragraphs." This led to feedback being delayed and made self-review harder.

In Year 9, another student's exam revision was inconsistent—practice focused on familiar networks content rather than trickier trigonometry and matrix multiplication.

For a Year 8 maths task, one student relied heavily on calculator shortcuts during matrix questions ("more practice is needed on calculator"), which hid gaps in understanding when the method changed.

Missed opportunities for deeper learning appeared across multiple years when written work stayed incomplete or revision avoided less confident topics.

Recent Achievements

One Albert Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to mix up x and y coordinates now reliably applies the correct formulas for midpoint, distance, and gradient, even graphing without errors.

A Year 12 student who previously hesitated to ask questions about differentiation is now tackling polynomial problems independently and recently explained the tangent–secant relationship back to the tutor unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 7 has shifted from guessing angles in triangles to methodically identifying sides using SOHCAHTOA before solving for missing values—last session, she found all missing angles herself on the first try.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Albert Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Albert Park Primary School.
