To make student develop their independence over mathematic and activate them to think critically, therefore forging their connections and passion with mathematic. That has always been my ultimate goal to almost any student, because or otherwise I am not really tutoring I am extremely flexible with solving almost any maths questions or E4…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be loving. Actually caring for the student's academic success will not only make them more likely to succeed, but it will help them go beyond to reaching a scholarly level. My two leading strengths are that I know how to teach to make difficult subjects more easy to understand and I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. Constant mentoring and motivation goes a long way in maximising students' academic performance. It is also necessary to give students personalised advice to ensure they target their time and energy in the right tasks, especially in…

I believe my most important role as a tutor is provide a supportive environment in a way that it is open to a variety of personalities and ways of thinking. It is only if the student is comfortable that the student and tutor can work cooperatively which will allow for the student to learn. The tutor should also attempt to understand the student.…

I think a tutor should in a sense hold the student accountable. For example a student might pick up a set of practice questions in their spare time and leave it mid way through but if that problem set was assigned by the tutor it gives the student far more reason to see the whole thing through. In this way we can provide (external) motivation to…

1. Students who believe they "are just bad at math" will block themselves from learning. It's important to rebuild that self-belief by pacing lessons to guarantee early, small wins that stack into genuine confidence. 2. Don't just hand over answers or act as a human calculator. The goal is to teach independent problem-solving strategies and…

First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, create a safe space to ask questions, and make learning feel approachable. It’s not just about teaching the steps to solve a problem, but helping the student truly understand the concept behind it. A good tutor should also be patient, adaptable, and…

Be a friend. This is how I was taught by my tutors and this is how I taught as well. If there is a deeper bond than that of just a student and teacher, the student really shines. I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. Mina has been fantastic, raising my daughter's (yr 8) maths test marks by 20% in the first test after just 3 tutoring sessions....My daughter also feels so much more confident in class, and not so terrified to be asked to answer any questions as she was before.
Coral, Alexandria

Inside AlexandriaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Daniel focused on probability using tree diagrams and completed practice questions on chance, while Year 8 student Mia reviewed angles and worked through problems involving rates and speed.

For Year 11, Lucas tackled a pre-assessment covering algebra basics, taxes and depreciation, as well as graphing techniques and trigonometry concepts like similar triangles and the law of cosines.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, a student often felt overwhelmed by lengthy word problems, saying "I don't know what to do when there's so much info." This led to skipped steps and confusion about which numbers were needed.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC left several algebra questions blank on a practice test, not attempting them even though similar types are likely to appear in exams.

In senior maths (Year 12), another student missed easy marks in trigonometry because she didn't read questions thoroughly at first—only correcting errors after they were pointed out mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Alexandria tutor noted that a Year 10 student, who used to avoid asking questions when stuck, now openly identifies tricky algebra steps and requests clarification before moving on—showing real initiative compared to her earlier hesitancy.

In a recent high school session, another student completed the last set of opportunity test questions and managed to solve half independently for the first time, rather than relying entirely on prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who previously struggled with long division was able to finish all her practice questions without needing any help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Green Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Central Sydney Intensive English High School.
