Help them to overcome their obstacles by helping them understand what they can't understand. Be a friend to them, not a teacher. Which helps most students to learn more efficiently as I believe. My communications skills are good. And my patience levels are very high so I can work with children very well as well. I also think that math and…

Helping each student be the best learner that they can be; independent learning is something that all successful students must be able to do. My philosophy is that if you want something, you can achieve it, as long as you dedicate the time and effort into it, and I will make sure that my students have this same mindset. I aim to make studying and…

Create a supportive, non-judgmental environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Identify individual learning needs and adapt teaching methods…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are: boost a student's self-confidence, and create a space where they are not afraid to make a mistake. It is more than the information provided; it is how they learn to trust and enjoy working with an individual who supports a student's confidence and independence over time I think…

Help the student reach their goals, of getting the understanding of the concept and high marks I can really put myself into the shoes of the student, as i understand not everyone is the same, and everyone learns in different ways. So I am very good at changing my approach depending on the student, and catering to their own unique needs and…

A tutor must be a friend and a tutor at the same time.So that, the students can ask their doubts without any inhibition. At the same time, a tutor should understand the weak points of a student and help them in tackling that. I can make learning smarter and not harder. Also,I can making learning a simple process and an enjoyable…

A tutor is responsible for motivating a student in order to achieve excellent grades. A tutor does not only train a student academically but also guides them to the right path in life by sharing their own experiences. I would consider demonstrating openness and listening to the needs of a child to be a positive trait for a tutor. I am definitely…

For students in grades 3 to 7, the most important thing a tutor can do is build their core confidence by showing them they are capable of solving hard problems on their own. It goes beyond just helping them finish this week's homework; it is about creating a supportive, fun environment where it is completely safe to make mistakes. A great tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is recognise their efforts and reassure them; encouraging them rather than scolding mistakes. I can recognise when students are unsure of topics or are too shy to ask for help. In recognising this, I revisit the topic till I'm sure they're certain how to approach the problem from all…

Being patient and understanding. At the beginning of my tutoring journey, I provided several private one on one tutoring sessions. I started to expect a lot from the students as some students performed better than ours. But it is later I started understanding every student is different and we should always work at their pace. Never push them and…

A tutor must be well prepared and organised, prepared in not just knowing the material in and out so that they can teach confidently but also being able to provide the necessary material for the student beforehand which can maximise how much the student takes away. So thoughtfully planning the tutoring session beforehand or being familiar with…

For me, the two things that aided me most when I was being tutored in highschool were practice questions given to me by tutors and when these tutors took their time to really deconstruct these concepts until I fully understood them. My biggest strength is patience. Sometimes it takes students a long time to begin to understand certain concepts and…

Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Having a good tutor makes the subject automatically interesting and students tend to invest more time and put more effort into it. I am a very patient and dedicated person. The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

Lindsey, Alfred Cove

Inside Alfred CoveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia reviewed perimeter, area, and surface area from her recent measurement test, then practised Venn diagrams and two-way tables to prepare for a probability assessment.

Year 9 student Paige focused on multiplying and dividing decimals and worked through estimation strategies using real numbers, identifying areas for improvement with targeted examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael tackled ratios, rates, and percentages—solving financial mathematics problems involving simple interest and applying ratio reasoning in context.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, he relied heavily on a calculator for fraction questions, leading to missed practice with manual calculations and more errors when calculators weren't allowed.

A Year 11 student in algebra avoided writing out working steps—as noted, blank lines hid sign mistakes in equations—making it difficult to spot patterns or correct errors later.

In English (Year 5), incomplete homework meant less progress building vocabulary and academic writing skills.

One Year 9 student's lesson notes showed notetaking was patchy, resulting in confusion during topic reviews.

Each of these habits slowed confidence and left gaps before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Alfred Cove tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated with significant figures now tackling worded scientific notation problems independently, even rounding correctly to two and three significant figures.

In a recent high school maths session, another student who once struggled with choosing the right formula for simple interest was able to identify which calculation method fit each question type and explain her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner—who used to stay quiet during lessons—has begun verbalising his thinking while working through multi-digit subtraction, allowing the tutor to address misunderstandings on the spot.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Melville Primary School.
