In mi opinion, a tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. He/she should not hesitate in repeating an explanation as many times as necessary if the student doesn't understand any topic. After finishing my bachelor in Aerospace engineering and some international…

Empathy. Teaching is fundamentally a transfer of knowledge, but that transfer only works if you first understand how the student thinks, where they're stuck, and what's making them anxious or disengaged. A good tutor adapts their explanation to the student's learning style rather than repeating the same approach that didn't work the first time.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. That will help to develop the psychology of a student in more positive way to move forward with their willingness of thinking…

Tutors can make the students to understand the topic from the scratch, so as to make sure the kid is able to solve the problems on its own. In this way, student excels in the class at school, and it helps in boosting up the confidence. After working for overall 2 years with kids, I have become really patient and understand and read when and which…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and provide a steady, and provide safe reliable environment where a student feels comfortable making mistakes, I'm focused on being a mentor who always shows up prepared. Instead of spoon-feeding the answers, I like to break a problem down into logical blocks and ask the right…

The first step is to listen to the problem of the student. Identify the best way to teach the student. Then slowly improve the confidence in the student to master the subject. My strengths as a tutor are clear communication, patience, and the ability to adapt explanations to different learning styles while building students’ confidence and…

The most important things a tutor can do for students is to teach as well as keep them motivated on their progress. A tutor shapes a child or an adult to get the best out of themselves and helps them gain courage and be brave with their studies. To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. I often explain the solution with step by step method, trying to simplify complex solution, and I often use easier example or simulation in…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

Inside AlphingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Saxon revised indices, number lines, and the conversion of decimals and fractions to prepare for an upcoming test.

In Year 9, Ethan worked on structuring essays with a focus on crafting strong introductions and body paragraphs using relevant evidence from texts.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Nicholas practised analysing lyrics for his English oral presentation and refined his ability to identify key themes in "The Sapphires."

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly struggled to connect algebraic rules with their purpose, often relying on memorisation instead of understanding—this led to confusion when teachers and peers offered differing methods.

As one tutor noted, "she was more comfortable repeating similar questions than unpacking why a method worked," which made worded problems especially challenging.

In VCE English, a senior student's essays lacked evidence and structure; attempts at analysis were undermined by summary-style writing and unclear topic sentences.

This meant promising ideas remained unsupported in assessments, affecting marks even when insight was present.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Alphington noticed that Nicholas, a high school student, has started using the TEEL essay structure more independently and now selects evidence to support his points without prompting—something he was hesitant about earlier in the term.

Taylah, also in high school, recently surprised her tutor by recalling key algebra techniques after a long break and smoothly solving new problems on her own, which marks a shift from needing step-by-step guidance last year.

Meanwhile, Aden (primary) took real pride in his maths progress and now volunteers to try challenging addition questions first, instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Alphington Primary School.
