I believe that a tutor should understand that students have different ways of the studying that actually help them in their studies, and they should be able to adapt and prepare new ways of teaching that is most valuable to students. A tutor should be motivating but disciplinary to students, to ensure they maintain a good mindset towards their…

Spending time and resources on improving myself so that the I as a tutor can make the student understand better. Being honest, patient and a good listener adds up to it. Also a tutor needs to be confident enough to make the student reach the goal. I am patient enough to listen and understand what the student want to say and where he/she might be…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is make sure that the students understand the concepts thoroughly. It is so important for students to understand the concepts rather than just solving questions in a particular order and hoping for the best. A tutor can inspire the students and also make them love a subject/ topic. They can boost their confidence in what they learn. I think I have the high amount of patience required to repeat oneself until the student comprehends a new concept. I also find it easy to connect to the other and stop from burdening a student with too much information.…

Offering emotional support along with academic guidance can significantly impact a student's willingness to engage with the subject matter. I…

The most important thing I can do for students in to have effective communication skills. If you can not tailor your communication in order for your student to grasp what you are trying to teach them then you can not become a well rounded tutor. A tutor must be considerate about a child's limitations and strengths and these qualities are vastly different between every individual child. One child may understand math while another child may be more humanities oriented. Understanding this, a teacher can understand a child's boundaries and understand how to microdose information in a manner…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. I consider encouragement, feedback and trust to be an important part of tutoring. The teacher should support the learner to become more confident in their own academic capabilities, giving them timely and accurate feedback. Also, it is just as important to build positive relationships with your students so they can come to you with their problems…

Local Reviews

Haven't looked back, ezy maths has really propelled my child as far as her grades at school. Our maths Tutor has been fantastic. My child felt comfortable with him from the beginning and has been broadening and strengthening her knowledge ever since. With regular feedback from Tutor you feel you are always in the loop in relation to child's development.
Mary, Altona

Inside AltonaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Madison focused on similar triangles and practiced trigonometry and Pythagoras' Theorem with exam-style questions, while also exploring compound interest as part of a class validation task.

In Year 10, Liam worked on consolidating his skills in applying Pythagoras to worded problems and using trigonometric ratios to find unknown side lengths in triangles.

Meanwhile, another Year 10 student, Ella, covered bearings in trigonometry and revisited measurement concepts including volume and surface area calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student, when solving worded trigonometry problems, tended to avoid writing out steps and key words, making it harder to spot where misunderstandings occurred. This meant errors often went unnoticed until review time.

In Year 8 algebra, over-reliance on the calculator for identifying gradients in linear functions led to confusion about core concepts; as one tutor put it, "he could find the answer but struggled to explain how he got there."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student often forgot to bring completed homework, leaving gaps in practice that slowed progress with times tables and division tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Altona noticed that a Year 9 student, after initially hesitating to ask for help, began actively seeking clarification on trigonometric ratios and then independently solved for unknown side lengths using SIN, COS, and TAN.

Another high school student who used to skip steps with linear graphs is now confidently plotting points and explaining the meaning of rise over run without prompting—she even developed her own summary sheet for an upcoming SAC.

In primary, one student who would guess times tables has started working them out aloud step by step, moving from 10×3 backwards and discovering new patterns on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Altona Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
