I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

I think the most important thing is to listen to the student and allow them to feel confident in asking for help. It's important to make sure that the student doesn't feel dumb or like they're being looked down upon when asking a question. It's also important to be honest, if you don't know the answer it's better to tell the student this and…

The most important thing to being a tutor is the passion towards teaching and the motivation to get the best results from his/her students. It is also crucial for a tutor to be friendly and approachable to every student. A tutor should be available to help the student cope with any difficulties, even if this requires an extra personal approach to…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

Be patient and understanding and realise that each student has different needs, and that the best way to help each student is to alter the tutoring experience to they needs. Additionally being clear with the student of what their goals are from the beginning and reassuring and instilling confidence in them that they can achieve them. I think my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for student is to encourage them to do their best, and help them develop a passion for the things they are learning so that they don't develop a resentment for school like many children do. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create an environment where the student feels fully comfortable and confident. It’s crucial that they never hesitate to ask questions or admit when something isn’t clear. When students feel safe and supported, genuine learning can take place. After that, I think it’s about helping them…

Instil confidence, teach problem solving and critical thinking that can be applied across all academic areas, and encourage resilience when students are struggling, reiterating that it is okay to not understand straight away and that persisting is the most important thing. A tutor can do a lot for a student. But I feel like the most important thing that can be done is to change the idea of a negative notion about a subject in the students mind. Attitude plays a key role in learning, and diminishing that fear, and giving the student confidence can really change their entire interest and perception about that certain…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. I would like to answer this question from the student’s point of view. It’s not important for the tutor to know each and everything but what is important is that if the student is unable to understand a topic and the tutor is also not aware of it, it’s his/her responsibility to give that student the assurance that he/she will try to solve it…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Inside AscotTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jackson worked on the unit circle and bearings, using diagrams to reinforce understanding of angle measurement.

For Year 10, Emma focused on solving quadratic equations and graphing their turning points as well as intercepts.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised differentiation and anti-differentiation techniques for assignments, including practical applications with sine and cosine functions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 mathematics, a student hesitated to incorporate draft feedback into their assignment—"he used notes from the draft but still repeated small errors," one tutor noted—which meant improvements weren't fully realised in the final version.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student frequently left out full working for algebraic problems, especially when rearranging equations; skipping these steps made it difficult to pinpoint calculation issues later.

In Year 4, another learner's lack of confidence with multiplication led to second-guessing and slowed progress during mental arithmetic drills. Missed chances to solidify skills created visible frustration after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Ascot tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitation, started explaining her own steps out loud when graphing quadratics—something she'd always left to the tutor before.

In a recent high school session, a Year 12 student tackled tricky inequalities independently for the first time; previously, he'd freeze and wait for prompts but now sets up the solution himself.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student surprised his tutor by checking his multiplication answers without being asked and correcting two mistakes on his own before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ascot State School.
