They can be the person they look up to whilst talking about their passions/what they want to do in the future etc. However one of the greatest things students can learn from their tutor could be from their own experience such that it will be more reliable and inspiring than any other theory I love working with kids, especially during my school…

- Be approachable about any problems the student may be having in the area of study - be friendly, patient and accepting of the fact that everyone makes mistakes, helping the student overcome the challenges they face in the area of study without any judgement. This in turn builds confidence and comfort between tutor and student. Until year 9 I…

By simplifying complex concepts, creating an engaging learning environment, and providing clear explanations, a tutor can instill confidence in the student. Additionally, fostering a positive and supportive relationship helps in addressing any…

Having patience and perseverance - the student isn't not understanding the content out of malice, the tutor just needs to figure out another way to teach them. I approach each student with an open mind, in order to curate a learning method best suited to their age and personality. Patience and creativity are two qualities that I pride myself on…

I truely believe that the most important thing as a tutor is being there for your students. You not only have to give your best to help them you should also be a person of trust for them. In a lot of situations those students have problems beyond the school like in private life so that affects their grades. By just talking with them personally and…

The most vital thing that can be done is helping a student feel capable and confident. Grades and content matter, but confidence is what will help them with almost everything in their life as a human being. My goal is to create an environment where the student feels safe to make a mistake, and doesn't feel pressured to get the concept within the…

The most important things will be assisting them to keep up with the school schedule and solving problems they want to know. A tutor should also guide students by giving them study advice and tips, boosting their confidence in different subjects. My strength as a tutor is that I often give students the feeling of studying with a friend, which…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is get them to enjoy or at least engage more with a subject they may be struggling with. Proving new angles and fresh insight is one of the best ways to do that. I also think providing students with an internal motivation can be very helpful (getting them to engage with their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide him/her with a safe space and approachable attitude to ask any questions he/she might have. Furthermore, trying to ease the burden on a student by simplifying the concepts as much as possible is yet another important thing. Lastly, not trying to rush the concepts due to shortage…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create an environment in which the student can feel safe to question what is being discussed and openly communicate lack of understanding and vulnerability. In my opinion, the worst thing a mentor can do is to appear unapproachable. When I was in this position, my mentor was very…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them feel capable and supported. Many students who seek tutoring already experience self-doubt or frustration because they feel behind their peers. By identifying these gaps, setting achievable goals, and providing consistent encouragement through the learning process, a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to work the questions out and guide them rather than just telling them the answers. By actually teaching instead of telling, they are more likely to enjoy the subject and do well on exams and future assignments. The end goal of tutoring is for the student to be capable of…

Identifying the students' weaknesses is the most important. If you don't know their weaknesses, it would be difficult to target a specific area, which consequently makes the students unable to improve. Be patient with them. All students are different but also everyone has the capacity to learn. In my experience, there are two really important things a tutor can provide for a student. A tutor's primary responsibility to their student is to strengthen their knowledge of a subject, diving deeper into topics they may have already studied or simply reinforcing concepts they are struggling with. While this is the predominant purpose of a…

Inside AshgroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Maddie worked on measuring and drawing angles, including applying the Z and F rules for similar angles, and practiced finding missing angles in diagrams.

In Year 10, Daniel focused on quadratic equations by exploring factorising over the real numbers and using the discriminant to determine solution types.

For Year 12, Sarah tackled integration problems with emphasis on integrating exponential functions and applying the chain rule, while also revising differentiation techniques involving logarithmic scales.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to keep written work neat and clearly labeled during algebra tasks, making it harder to spot calculation errors—Bookwork also needs attention. Labelling questions, and setting out could be neater.

In Year 7, incomplete homework was noted; assigned worksheets on fractions and times tables weren't attempted between lessons, so concepts needed reteaching each week.

For a senior student in Maths Methods, over-reliance on calculator entry led to repeated decimal errors: Frequently missing a zero in small decimals.

A Year 12 Chemistry student delayed error analysis write-up, stalling progress on data interpretation until this step was completed.

Recent Achievements

One Ashgrove tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, who used to hesitate with logarithms and complex problem-solving, was able to complete all the challenging questions correctly and efficiently by the end of their session—something they'd previously found overwhelming.

Another high school student, after missing an entire topic on Earth geometry and time zones, managed to catch up within a single lesson and confidently solved related problems without extra prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger student has started showing more independence by remembering steps for converting fractions and decimals without being reminded, finishing all assigned problems accurately before the session ended.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Finbarr's School.
