Providing the student with adequate knowledge and information about what he's doing while studying and what he can do with his learning. This is what every tutor does and should do. My frankness and being able to get work done simultaneously. I can be the most cool teacher ever but can get pupils to study at the same time via some fun…

Giving a student the time and attention they need to ensure they can fully understand difficult concepts. In school (and university), there were many concepts in maths and physics that I struggled with. Asking the teacher sometimes worked, but often in a busy class they couldn't give me the time I needed to talk through exactly what I was…

Beyond teaching the student the core concepts behind a subject, I believe that the tutor can teach valuable study methods and techniques for exam preparation to help them achieve a better mark to reflect to their knowledge and understanding. I believe I am a naturally determined person, where if presented with a challenge I actively engage it.…

Establish their confidence to solve the questions independently. That doesn't mean you don't help when they are stuck. I will provide time for my students to try before I go through the questions under time limit. I have a solid understanding of the Yr11 and 12 maths knowledge. I know the typical exam standard questions, and where people usually…

I believe the 3 most important things a physics tutor can do for a student is: 1. being fluent with the content, 2. giving moral support when necessary and 3. create a sort of friendship with the student. I think my biggest strength as a tutor is to be able to teach via understanding content rather then rope learning, which i think is an…

I consider understanding the student's problems and establishing a strong rapport to be the most important things. Tutors may be great teachers or have excellent knowledge of the content, but providing the correct and necessary information is of utmost importance. Understanding what may prevent a student from achieving as high as they want allows…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the one-on-one attention that is not given to them in schools with large class sizes. The student needs to be able to feel comfortable enough to ask questions (even the embarrassing ones) and they need to know that the tutor will sit with them for as long as it…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

I believe the most important thing is to allow the student to share the same passion and interest for the subject, since that is the biggest factor for inciting motivation within the student to keep going. I am very patient, so if a student isn't fully understanding a topic even after multiple explanations, I wouldn't get frustrated, but instead…

I think the most important goal as a physics tutor is to create a positive environment for a student. Being patient, understanding and maintaining a positive attitude has a wide array of benefits, including learning. Second to this is the ability to help a student gain an instinctive understanding of the concept manner. More than just helping with…

Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. A good tutor, besides academic understanding, communication, patience and flexibility are the key aspects. Every student has their own unique learning curve and techniques, it is the tutor's job to discuss with the student and figure out the best way to convey the ideas and give appropriate study load. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all,…

Local Reviews

It was easy to get started on Maths tutoring for my son. I registered interest online and received a phone call soon afterwards. I advised my requirements and received a text from our new tutor within a few days. We have had one session so far. I was impressed by how knowledgeable the tutor was, and how relevant she made the session to my sons needs.

Inside Balwyn NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Charlie practised simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions using number lines for visual support.

In Year 8, Olivia explored concepts of percentages as well as GST and discounts, applying these to real-world scenarios.

For a Year 11 student, Daniel worked through integration by substitution and recognition methods, focusing on how to approach related SAC questions with extended mathematical reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was hesitant to attempt harder algebra problems, tending to focus on familiar questions; as the tutor noted, "she circled back to easy equations instead of tackling the more challenging ones." This meant less progress with complex substitution and balancing tasks.

In Year 11 Chemistry, a student often skipped writing out full working when applying ratios or unpacking redox titration questions—errors in calculation crept in unnoticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 Maths student leaned heavily on their calculator for trigonometric simplifications but missed opportunities to strengthen mental fluency; this slowed problem-solving under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Balwyn North tutor recently saw a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when solving equations now confidently add and subtract terms on both sides to isolate x, tackling problems without prompting.

In a senior session, a Year 12 student who previously struggled with trig identities managed to simplify fractions using trigonometric rules and successfully differentiate inverse trig functions for the first time.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had been guessing at shapes began accurately naming polygons with more than four sides and even transformed numerical digits into English up to 999 without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bede's School.
