I think the most important thing a tutor can do is understand each student's specialty. Each individual has a different learning style and catering to that style will allow them to learn efficiently. My strength as a tutor is my versatility. I can often change my teaching style to accommodate different…

A tutor can be sure that the student has grasped a concept and that they actually understand and in the future can approach what you have taught them, without the need of any assistance. My strengths: - I am commited and focused to the job I am set to do. - I am patient with people. - can easily approach and talk to people and make people feel…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student’s point of view and teach in a fun, engaging way that makes it easier for them to learn. Tutors should have a genuine interest in helping their students learn. My strengths are that I have experience as a tutor, I’m friendly and patient, and because I was recently a high…

There is a quote by William Butler Yeats that captures the essence of what I believe is crucial for a tutor: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." This means that a tutor's role is not just to transfer information to the student, but to spark their curiosity and interest in learning. Therefore, the most important…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student have confidence in himself. A tutor should build trust, listen actively, and empower the student to believe in their abilities. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor guides their student to understand the "why" behind concepts, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is essential in ensuring that the student is able to independently…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

Inside BanksmeadowTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ghazal focused on working with fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as refining her history journal writing by gathering information and crafting concise responses.

In Year 10, Sam tackled trigonometric identities and practised applying these to solve a range of problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack worked through advanced differentiation techniques including the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule using exam-style questions for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student struggled with time management during problem sets—"she took a while to remember the formula," leading to incomplete answers under exam conditions.

For a Year 11 extension maths student, over-reliance on notes was evident when working through calculus application questions; missing formula recall slowed progress and led to hesitation with unfamiliar content.

In English (Year 10), another student depended heavily on online resources for grammar and punctuation rather than self-correcting, which made written responses less coherent.

In each case, moments of uncertainty or avoidance left gaps in understanding that showed up most sharply in timed tasks or independent writing.

Recent Achievements

One Banksmeadow tutor noted that Lucy, a Year 12 student, now approaches challenging calculus and trigonometry questions independently—last month she would leave difficult problems unfinished, but this week she worked through trial paper questions on her own, correcting previous mistakes.

In a recent high school session, Ruby shifted from hesitating on algebraic inequalities to solving extension questions confidently and even asked for extra practice problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, Bas in Year 4 has started using pen-and-paper strategies for multiplication and division before reaching for the calculator—a big step up from his earlier guesswork—and finished all assigned word problems accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Banksmeadow Public School.
