I believe that the most important thing to do is to communicate with my student and get an idea of what they know and don't know. It is important to build upon existing knowledge to explain other concepts and to avoid confusing my student. I think my strength is being patient with my student. I also believe I can encourage improvement and work on…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to inspire a sense of lifelong learning for the subject that is being tutored. My major strength is my appreciation of the subjects I tutor. Along with that, I always prepare myself with material, supplementary exercises and further reading before class. As a student engineer, I am also very adept…

It's very important that a tutor can passionately engage with a student and journey with them as they progress. I also think that a tutor's role as a mentor in general is important I am very passionate about it and that allows me to enthusiastically and actively engage with students and try hard to help them understand and appreciate more…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. I always felt inspired to study after my sessions with…

Understanding the individual needs and learning styles of each student is crucial. Also, fostering a supportive, non-judgmental environment is key for students to ask questions freely and grasp concepts without worrying about making mistakes. Lastly, finding alternative strategies for solving problems is very important if the student is stuck on a…

Personally, the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire the student to be curious. Being in a 1-to-1 setting, it gives an ideal environment for the student to get personalised help. For me, I always let my students know no questions are stupid, I do not want the student to be afraid of asking question, and to ask questions whenever in…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create an environment where the student feels fully comfortable and confident. It’s crucial that they never hesitate to ask questions or admit when something isn’t clear. When students feel safe and supported, genuine learning can take place. After that, I think it’s about helping them…

A tutor can do a lot for a student. But I feel like the most important thing that can be done is to change the idea of a negative notion about a subject in the students mind. Attitude plays a key role in learning, and diminishing that fear, and giving the student confidence can really change their entire interest and perception about that certain…

We are very happy with the tutoring and our tutor is very good with my children. They are really enjoying it and this speaks volumes as they were both very opposed to the idea!

Inside BardonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Oskar worked on algebra and number patterns using his Year 5 Maths Resource book, with extra practice set for homework.

A Year 7 student used real-world Kokoda Challenge event data to calculate average speeds between checkpoints, applying rate and time calculations in a practical context.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons included probability concepts, normal distribution curves, and an introduction to derivatives and exponential distributions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, skipping the habit of back-checking led to "a few minor errors which checking could easily fix," especially when fractions were involved.

A Year 11 student tackling derivatives sometimes began new questions before finishing previous ones, causing confusion and unfinished working.

In upper primary, homework in multiplication was occasionally left incomplete or not attempted with pencil and paper, despite reminders.

For a Year 8 word problem set, rushing to answer before fully understanding the question resulted in misinterpreted tasks; as one tutor observed, "he needs to work on fully understanding what a question is asking before attempting it."

Recent Achievements

One Bardon tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess through division questions now talks aloud while working, and has started double-checking answers with pencil and paper—something he'd never done before.

In Year 8 maths, another student who often avoided larger worded problems has begun breaking them into steps using new strategies, showing clear independence in tackling multi-part questions.

A Year 4 learner, previously hesitant with subtraction, now solves bigger addition and subtraction tasks out loud, explaining her thinking as she works. Last week she completed her homework without any reminders or prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
