I think if I was a student I would want my tutor to be less intimidating and focus more on building my confidence, not only in the topics that is being but also to participate and join in the learning experience whether my answers are right or wrong. My strength as a tutor would be the breaking down of complex topics using example and relatable…

I think the most important thing is to encourage a student to be independent and learning how to solve their own problems. So, by not giving them the answers outright but ensuring that they are taught key methods that enable them to solve their own issue is very important especially in the long term. Having patience and attention to explain…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel understood and supported, not judged. Learning can be really challenging, especially when you’re already dealing with pressure, self doubt, or even language barriers. In the end, what matters most is that a tutor helps a student find confidence in their own ability to learn…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for students at their bad times and not ridicule them. If a student has a bad time and cannot fully focus on studies, a tutor should help them and understand that its not the person but the situation that is leading to this. A tutor should go to the full extent to help the student get better at…

The most vital job of a a tutor is to provide enough confidence to the students so that They can have believe in themselves to solve any numerical problems or to understand any other subjects. I think tutor should do everything for his or her students because after the parents only teacher is one person who can very closed for the student. Understanding and patience, some students lack knowledge of basic concepts and require a boost, so it's important to tailor tutoring styles to each student, whether that is written examples or oral analogies, especially in the Maths and Sciences. I believe a tutor should teach a student how to love a subject instead of do it. For a student to be able to realise why they adore the subject and why they are studying it in the first place. A tutor should try their best to allow their students to feel like they are in a safe place, where they can ask any questions and feel free without feeling…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure that the student feels they are being listened to and meeting their needs. For example, it is essential to work at the pace of your student, if your student only wants to pass their subject it is your job to make sure they are best suited for that to happen. Or if your student…

Inside BeckenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jack practised addition and subtraction of hundreds, as well as solving basic word problems involving carrying numbers.

Year 9 student Sarah focused on factorisation and graphing quadratics, including finding the roots and sketching graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas worked through algebraic expansion and factorisation using different methods, with extra attention given to tackling challenging test-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, calculator input errors and missed negative signs ("Needs to ensure the input in the calculator is correct") led to avoidable mistakes on algebra questions—one tutor noted, "she lost marks when a negative sign was overlooked."

For a Year 11 English student, over-reliance on copying text instead of paraphrasing limited essay clarity and structure.

In Year 4, messy handwriting and writing outside given spaces made it difficult for teachers to follow working.

A Year 6 student sometimes avoided sounding out unfamiliar words, skipping them during reading tasks. This left gaps in understanding and confidence mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Beckenham recently noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to express original ideas now starting to write answers in their own words, moving away from simply copying the text.

In a high school maths session, another student who often struggled with logical problem-solving managed to structure their answers clearly after just some guided hints.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to need frequent reminders about spelling has begun spelling out words independently when shown once and can now name various places without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cannington Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gibbs Street Primary School.
