Making the student feel comfortable and at ease with the subject. So many children and even adults struggle with feeling inedquate or embarrassed about their academic abilities, especially in maths, and I want to break down that psychological barrier. I'm good at giving in-depth explanations of concepts that connect to real-world examples that the…

I think first and foremost, the most important thing a tutor can do is improve a student's confidence in their academic abilities. improving a student's self confidence enables them to not only feel more comfortable participating in class but also makes them believe that they actually know the content and can understand the information. The most important thing a tutor can do for the student is understand the student's mind and help them achieve their goal. The tutor can help them achieve their goal if they have difficulties and help them understand the basic concept. My strength as a tutor is the most important aspect of understanding the student. Helping them understand the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence as a learner. Rather than just giving answers, a tutor should guide students to understand the process so that they can apply on their own. My strengths as a tutor lie in my patience, adaptability, and communication. My teaching style…

A tutor needs to be able to clearly communicate with the student with their studies. There is little meaning if tutors do nut put in the effort to understand how the students think when they're studying. I have had experience in informal tutoring during high school. With clarity and great cohesion I was able to teach younger students how to…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do with a student is have patience. I think patience underlines all the critical aspects regarding tutoring. To engage effectively with a student, it has to happen naturally, it can't be forced. It does take a bit of time to understand what kind of teaching style a student will respond well to.…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build understanding, confidence, and a positive learning mindset. A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

I believe critical thinking is the most important skill that a tutor can bring to a student, since I think the responsibility of a tutor is to lead and motivate a student to complete their school tasks by themselves, rather than depending on help from a tutor. A tutor should also provide adequate solutions for different students. As I believe…

Inside BentleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anna practised converting between fractions and decimals as well as solving measurement problems involving area.

For Year 8, Tom focused on graphing linear relations and working through equations and inequalities using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia revised trigonometric relationships by connecting sine, cosine, and tangent values with angles, alongside applying the Pythagoras' theorem to a variety of questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left out written working in algebra, as noted: "need practise showing 'working' when solving any mathematical problems," which led to hidden errors and slower correction.

In Year 10 trigonometry, confusion between values and angles persisted—"easy to get distracted most of the time"—especially with radians.

A younger student repeatedly forgot the multiplication tables during fraction work, making even basic calculations slow.

For several sessions, a Year 7 did not bring required materials like textbooks or exercise books; this meant missed practice opportunities and incomplete follow-up on geometry concepts discussed in lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Bentleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who'd always hesitated to speak up when stuck with algebra now confidently asks clarifying questions before attempting problems—something she never did last term.

In another session, a Year 11 student who previously made frequent errors graphing trigonometric equations managed to solve and graph each type correctly on her own, only double-checking answers at the end.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often mixed up fractions and decimals is now reliably converting percentages to fractions without prompting and can explain each step aloud as he works.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul's School.
