I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them see their academic potential and develop a love of learning. It is crucial as students go through schooling to see the benefits of learning and develop a strong work ethic. I believe all children learn at an individual pace and that it is critical to have patience and…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. Learning new things can be tricky and scary which is why a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning pace, be able to communicate thoroughly and also make the learning experience a fun one I am a very patient person which I…

I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. Give them the confidence they need to stay motivated to acheive their Goals. Whether it be merely passing a class or excelling wih 99%, any improvement needs to be congratulated. Be patient, if the student is not understanding your explanation, obviously a different approach is needed. Do not lecture. This the students are already receiving in…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student are to be patient, be approachable, be kind and be able to teach. The student should be able to walk away from a lesson feeling confident in what they learned and not being afraid to ask any questions. Listening is the most important thing a tutor can do for the student. Tutors cannot understand a student's requirements and expectations until they effectively give time to the student for communicating the same. However, listening alone does not suffice. A tutor must act on these requirements and prepare custom learning plans. Being someone who…

From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

Inside BictonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Xavier focused on adding and subtracting larger numbers, practising three-digit addition and takeaways to build confidence with bigger values.

In Year 7, Alice revised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as tackling measurement conversions such as millimetres to kilometres using real-world examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Max worked through algebraic equations involving variables alongside adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions that include variables.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student struggled to set out addition and subtraction clearly, often omitting working for multi-step problems—she sometimes is too quick to give an answer or gets confused about what number is used for what part of solving the question.

In Year 8, a student's decimals work was held back by difficulty lining up columns when adding or subtracting, making errors harder to spot.

For a senior student (Year 10), test revision focused only on familiar fraction types; less time went into practicing new question formats.

When homework was missed without notice in Years 7 and 9, gaps in skill development persisted into following lessons.

Recent Achievements

A Bicton tutor noticed a big shift in one high school student, Poppy, who previously hesitated with algebra but now rearranges equations on her own and is even tackling multiplication with brackets—something she used to avoid.

Another secondary student, Chloe, moved from needing hints to solve improper-to-mixed fraction questions to working through most of them confidently and making only minor mistakes.

With a younger learner, Xavier, sessions have focused on building independence; he now counts digits without being prompted and tries new problems solo instead of waiting for help. Last week, he finished all his addition exercises unassisted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as AH Bracks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bicton Primary School.
