The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only make them understand what they are teaching them, but also make the student enjoy the process. I am an excellent communicator and understand the subjects that I am good at extremely well. Additionally, I am an extremely adept learner and can easily understand any material that I…

Giving constructive feedback. Answer any questions the student has. Give advice and direction for general exam strategies. In uni or highschool, many students complain that the teachers or lecturers aren't able to explain properly or give any useful feedbacks. Therefore I think the 3 items above are the most important in helping the student to…

Support. The education system can be tough, and confidence is fluid along with grades, and it is up to the tutor to remind a student of how far they have come and how capable the student is. The largest impact on results is often not the time spent studying, but the foundational pillar that is psychology as this impacts every part of education.…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to be patient and giving a student time to grasp a concept, not rushing them to try to pick things up instantly. I also think that as a tutor, I should be able to adapt my explanations, to cater to a student's needs, such as using diagrams/graphs, or explaining things metaphorically. I think my…

I think the goal of a tutor is to give students the knowledge they need, not only about subject contents but also about a person. Tutors should become a guideline to follow as a person, I mean honest, kind, responsible, etc. A tutor should be good at listening. Tutors need to listen to their students to understand their needs. A tutor should be…

Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. Making sure to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student and tutor according to their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the…

A tutor should connect with a student and approach problems in a way best for the student rather than what a tutor is more familiar with. With many problems, there are a variety of ways to go about it. The ability to adapt for the student to best understand it is important. I believe that I am good at describing solutions in a variety of ways to…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to make their students more confident in their learning. From personal experience, students preform at their best when they are confident in their knowledge of a particular subject, and a tutor is their to, not only help with learning new and existing material, but consolidate pre-learned…

A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

Having someone to rely on. The tutor and student connection is more personal that that of a teacher. This allows them to become closer and ensure that the student will concentrate more. Additionally a close connection between he student and tutor reminds the student that they always have someone on there side. Someone who they can rely on and work…

Inside Black RockTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Isabel practised times tables and division with remainders, then worked on reading comprehension using short stories.

For Year 9 Jack, sessions focused on simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions as well as working with like terms in algebra.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Mia tackled solving linear equations using a CAS calculator and revised geometric sequences and arithmetic sequences through chapter exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for exams left most revision until the week before, which limited time for deep practice and meant she "needed to work on more questions prior to the test."

For a Year 8 student, working mainly on easier exercise numbers was noted: "try completing one or two of the difficult questions... much more effective than just the lower numbered exercises."

In Year 6 maths, messy written calculations sometimes made it hard to find errors; as observed, "needs to lay out his steps on paper." These habits led to last-minute stress and hidden mistakes during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Black Rock noticed Isabel, a Year 9 student, has begun to check her answers independently using the textbook and corrects her own mistakes—a big shift from relying on step-by-step guidance earlier this term.

In Year 11 maths, Grace started preparing questions ahead of each session and now confidently tackles financial maths problems she once found confusing.

Meanwhile, Gisele in Year 3 recently managed to read aloud for an extended period without hesitation and even remembered to pause at commas—something she struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Beaumaris Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Black Rock Primary School.
