The tutor can help the student to understand the concept and show him how it can be used in daily life. It will help to motivate the student and make his interest int he subject. I am really friendly with the kids and tend to explain the concepts properly. I also go prepared with my content which helps in teaching the student. I am very patient so…

The most important area that a tutor can provide a student is to make sure they are in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. I believe this is the first step in helping those that are not too keen in school or homework. After providing a friendly setting, this would lay the foundation that would help enable the student to develop a…

From my past experience as a tutor I have seen many students cry over their results they've gotten from their previous test. As their tutor/mentor I consider it to be very important to let them know that it is not the end of the world and it is much more important to evaluate on their mistakes or errors that they have made on the test to achieve…

A tutor should do more than simply teach a subject for a student. A tutor is an individual that can encourage others to act at their best, this can be in the academic field but can extend to other aspects of life as well. A tutor's most important goal should always be understanding, and if possible, relating to the circumstances of each of their…

In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. A great tutor must have the ability to connect deeply with the students to give them personalised teaching methods and materials, which ultimately increase both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to successfully pass on knowledge they possess to the student in an efficient manner. However, it is also important to instill confidence and motivation within the students as well. My strengths as a tutor lie in my ability as a quick-learner, good communicator and excellent…

1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. I think being a good tutor should be encouraging and passionate. And tutors should know what students need for help on their strengths and weakness. Also, tutors also should always encourage students to be brave in asking questions so the students can get faster improvement. Especially for young age students, they are hard to focus but it's…

To be there to support the student academically and psychologically. This enables me to assist them on their journey of growing up, helping them with their study and listen to their struggles if they are…

1. The tutor should be open minded and let the student show any problems in their homework or tests etc. 2. I can be assertive, but not authoritative. Students tend to become discouraged if they find that their tutor is directing/forcing information when uncalled for. Some of my stregnths include: - setting an agenda before we start each class…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to make the material understandable and relatable, build their confidence, and create a supportive environment. It's crucial to adapt to their learning style, encourage them, and show them how to tackle problems independently. Ultimately, helping them develop a genuine interest in…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to encourage their passion for the subject and to help them develop a desire to learn. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in themselves. Teaching content is part of it, but guiding them to believe they can tackle challenges on their own is even more important. A tutor should make learning feel manageable by breaking things into clear, achievable pieces and giving students tools they…

There are two most essential things that a tutor should do for a student: motivation and guidance. A student only find a tutor when he finds difficulties in learning a subject and is not confident in taking the exams. Therefore, the first thing that each tutor needs to do is to encourage the students to study and face their own problems.…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student are to increase their confidence in the subject, provide a solid base of understanding rather than just rote learning, try and dispel existing doubts and encourage a sense of discovery. Tutors can help build confidence of students, teaching them ways to learn and think flexibly when they encounter challenging material. Whilst our initial tutor candidate request was not available, the allocated tutor has been able to gel very well and quickly with our son. Our son is now saying he is enjoying biology more now that he is getting a better understanding of the topics.

Inside BlackburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Carla focused on polynomial operations and transformations to prepare for her upcoming SAC, including practice questions on both topics.

For Year 11 Ethan, recent lessons included mastering long division and factor theorem with polynomials, plus interpreting and sketching square root graphs and hyperbolas.

Meanwhile, Year 12 Ava worked through differentiation by first principles as well as applications such as finding the equations of tangents and normals to curves.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 test preparation, one student's "rushed approach" and rapid self-questioning led to errors, particularly when tackling polynomial long division—"he was eager to start but skipped clarifying his plan."

In Year 9 mathematics, another student hesitated to build her summary book or organize earlier notes, making it harder to recall older concepts during revision.

For a Year 12 assessment, an over-reliance on calculators meant she missed key steps in graph transformations by not setting out working clearly.

These habits left students feeling unprepared and less confident as exam dates approached.

Recent Achievements

One Blackburn tutor noticed that Lachlan, a high school student, has become much more confident with statistics—he now interprets histograms and calculates measures like mean and quartiles almost independently, whereas he used to hesitate with these.

In another session, Haydn showed real growth by recognising mistakes in graphing questions without prompting; previously, he'd just move on if something felt tricky.

For a younger student, Carla demonstrated new initiative by asking for clarification whenever she got stuck instead of staying silent—a big shift from earlier lessons where she rarely spoke up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blackburn Primary School.
