The most important things a tutor can do for a student are creating a supportive environment, tailoring their teaching approach to the student's learning style, and fostering independence. Providing constructive feedback and instilling a love for learning also help build the student’s confidence and encourage growth. As a tutor, I think my…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make difficult concepts feel easier and less overwhelming for a student. It's also really important to encourage them and remind them that they are capable of understanding the material, especially when they are feeling stuck or frustrated. I think a good tutor should create a comfortable…

The most important things I can do for a student are to understand their individual needs and adapt my teaching to suit their learning style. Every student studies differently, so I focus on explaining concepts in a way that makes sense to them and adjusting the pace and approach as needed. I also aim to make learning enjoyable and engaging, so…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and understand the student's learning style and being able to adapt accordingly. Students often learn at a different pace from each other and a tutor should understand when to slow down, when to speed up, or when to adjust the teaching style to suit the student's learning…

It is important to be patient with a student; they won't always understand what is being taught and as a tutor you need to be able to explain something in a way that they will understand the concept. I think it's also crucial that the tutor is organised; arrives a few minutes early and knows what they will be going through and brings any…

To explain things in such a way as if they aren't familiar with the concept. This way they are able to understand what they are doing and why it is done in such a way. From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

It is a necessity for a tutor to establish rapport with their students. I believe a tutor should be able to clearly communicate the fundamentals of a subject in simple terms to ensure the student can build on their knowledge. I believe this also increases the chances that the student will actually want to learn and improve more than they did before. Understanding any problems the student is facing with subject is also…

As someone who has had tutors in the past; I can say with confidence that a tutor allows the student to catch up on what they didn’t understand in school the first time. Some topics are just harder than others.Unfortunately, most schools won’t slow down for each individual student just because they’re having a hard time. A tutor can enable a…

Inside BooragoonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Lillie worked through patterns and algebra, plus location and transformations using tailored questions to target areas needing improvement.

For Year 8 Matteo, the session focused on linear lines and solving simultaneous equations, including test-style problems for practice.

Year 10 Olivia reviewed past measurement tests—covering perimeter, area, surface area, and volume—and then revised probability concepts such as Venn diagrams and two-way tables to strengthen understanding before her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits need attention across year levels.

A Year 8 student repeatedly ran out of time in tests, with the tutor noting, "a lot of questions that weren't answered were due to running out of time."

For a Year 10 learner, messy or incomplete working—especially skipping steps in algebra—meant errors went unnoticed until review.

In one senior session, failure to bring required textbooks and materials led to lost learning opportunities; as observed: "needs to bring textbook to tutoring sessions."

Meanwhile, a primary student's homework was not completed before the lesson, resulting in half the session being spent catching up instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Booragoon tutor recently saw a Year 11 student take real initiative by starting a daily journal to track tricky economics topics, something he hadn't done before, which helped him recall key concepts for his final exam.

A high schooler who used to hesitate when stuck on maths questions now openly talks through her problem-solving steps and cross-checks answers aloud, rather than staying silent or guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often rushed her homework has begun completing all assigned work independently and on time—last week she handed in every task without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Booragoon Primary School.
