To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. Empathy and communication skills. Having been working since I was 16, my mindset has changed ever since.…

Its often overlooked how important it is to develop problem-solving habit for distinct type of questions apart from understanding the concept alone. For a student attending math tuition, the main purpose is to improve both their understanding and problem-solving skills. The latter skill is only perfected by thorough practice of different types of…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's understanding and confidence rather than simply give them the answer. A tutor should know how to: be patient, listen to student needs, explain concepts in a way that works for them. From my experience, I learned also that encouragement can make a really big difference. I want my students…

Be understanding and patient. Each student is trying to reach a goal, and as a tutor, I have to help them achieve that goal without taking away their effort. I think I can connect well with students. In this way, they’re comfortable telling me if they have difficulty understanding something and I can think of ways that would connect lessons to…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

There are a few but I think the point of a tutor is for reinforcement. There is no way that a tutor will be able to pump out as much content as a student will be able to consume from traditional school, however with the 1 on 1 nature of tuition, tutors can take topics a lot further than a teacher would for an entire class. Not only this, a tutor…

I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

As I said above, sharing knowledge is always the first priority. Because our job, as tutors, is to help the students with problems related to knowledge, wisdom. Inside BraybrookTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Chelsea focused on surds and the first five laws of indices, then practised Pythagoras' Theorem for both finding hypotenuse and shorter sides, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

For Year 9, Ruby tackled negative indices and exponential equations before moving into graphs of exponential growth and decay.

Meanwhile, primary student Ethan (Grade 5) completed NAPLAN numeracy practice, including dot plots and multi-step worded questions to build confidence with data displays and problem-solving.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student often avoided writing out working when solving linear equations, saying "I can do this in my head," which led to missed sign errors and confusion during revision.

In a senior class, a Year 11 found herself relying heavily on her calculator for trigonometry but struggled on non-calculator tests—she wasn't confident with manual division or recalling times tables.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner left homework incomplete after a busy week; gaps in fraction skills persisted into lessons. Each instance left the student frustrated, searching for answers that could have been clearer with stronger habits.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Braybrook noticed that Chelsea, a Year 10 student, has gone from struggling with surds to confidently simplifying them and now independently applies trigonometric ratios to complex worded problems—a big leap from earlier sessions where she hesitated with multi-step processes.

Sasha, also in high school, recently started sketching parabolas by completing the square without prompts and tackled all questions on her test, even when unsure—showing new initiative compared to her previous reluctance.

Meanwhile, Camilla in Year 5 has begun creating dot plots herself and now explains her answers out loud after previously staying quiet during problem-solving.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Caroline Chisholm Catholic College.
