Tutors can make the students to understand the topic from the scratch, so as to make sure the kid is able to solve the problems on its own. In this way, student excels in the class at school, and it helps in boosting up the confidence. After working for overall 2 years with kids, I have become really patient and understand and read when and which…

Allowing the students to display the knowledge they have learnt is important to ensure that they indeed have learnt. There is always a chance the student just says they are fine with the content in the rush to move on, but giving them the time to explain what they have learnt will ensure the session has been effective. My patience gives the…

Imparting the knowledge to student in a practical way not for grades .Imparting the personal willness to solve any type of problem.I consider these things as the most important things a tutor can do for a student. I just don't teach ,I will illustrate the problem in a pictorial way so that student will get an idea of what he is doing, later on I…

Teach Students How to Think, Not Just What to Memorise My most important role is to help students develop independent mathematical reasoning. Instead of relying on memorised formulas or copying worked examples, I encourage students to understand the principles behind each problem and recognise how to approach new questions. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. A lot of students already know more than they think they just need someone to believe in them, guide them, and show them how to approach problems step by step. One of my biggest strengths is patience. I never rush a student, rather I give them time to…

I think that some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to give them motivation to practice in the subject and to offer another perspective of a subject if the initial one wasn't clicking with the student. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to trust his student and teach him lessons as engaging as possible. Trusting student is very important as the student will gain more motivation when he or she is trusted. The lessons should be also engaging for the student to learn things pragmatically and also be motivated to learn more.…

A good tutor should build a student's confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a supportive space where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

Secondly would be to be approachable and appear easy-going so the student will not be intimidated or scared in having learning sessions with you.…

The most important thing in tutoring in my opinion is to understand your audiences and customise your approach based on that. in order to be an effective tutor, someone needs to connect to their students. I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

Inside BurnleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sam worked through factorisation in algebra and solved chemistry mole calculation problems, using step-by-step examples to clarify each process.

For Year 10, Matt focused on structuring English essays by embedding quotes effectively and linking evidence to themes in "The Golden Age."

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Yasmine practiced plotting linear equations on a graph—finding coordinates and understanding why these equations form straight lines—by working through visual exercises together.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student in Mathematics often avoided writing out equations and working, relying on mental calculations—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors. This made it hard to spot where his reasoning broke down.

In Year 11 English, a student repeatedly left homework incomplete and didn't use highlighters or mindmaps for essay planning, missing opportunities to structure arguments more clearly.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 struggled with consistently bringing required books to lessons, disrupting focus at the start of each session.

During a Physics assignment in Year 12, brief answers were submitted without detail, limiting depth and understanding.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Burnley noticed Matt now completes all his English homework ahead of time and uses planning tables and flash cards to organise ideas—previously he'd only write brief notes and needed prompting.

In Year 10 Biology, another student who once hesitated with project tasks started volunteering creative ways to build a plant cell diorama after some encouragement.

Meanwhile, Yasin (Year 12) is showing real independence: instead of waiting for solutions, he's begun applying physics formulas by himself during lessons and checking his own answers before asking for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Boroondara Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College (Victoria) - FFV Burnley.
