I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is be understanding, empathetic, and help them reach their individual goals. Every student experiences challenges differently and at different rates, and the best thing we can do is be empathetic, continue to attack each problem as they come, and support them to reach whatever…

I think a biology tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

Encouraging kids and placing them in a healthy and thriving learning environment is just as important as educating them. I will speak encouragement into students, to believe in themselves and their abilities to thrive in their learning. This is so important, as I have seen and experienced the worst of demeaning comments and attitudes from…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a biology tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen…

The most important thing for a biology tutor is to never underestimate a student, and to be there for them as a support and to show them that they can. If a student loses self esteem and think that they can't do it...they wont. It's all about giving them a healthy mindset which allows them to gain the knowledge given. My biggest strength i believe…

To be flexible. Every one of us is a one-of-a-kind human being. This fact is so important that as a biology tutor, being flexible in the teaching approach will help the students grow in their own way without being forced to follow others' approaches. Empathy and communication skills. Having been working since I was 16, my mindset has changed ever…

I believe the most important thing a biology tutor can do is allowing a student time to try and solve aspects of the problem themselves following proper guidance, instead of hand-holding them the entire way. This helps build critical thinking skills and allows the student to recognise the roots of the question. A tutor should also be understanding…

The most important thing that a biology tutor could do for a student would be to gage what level they are at, and give them questions according to that, because if someone was aiming to get above 50% on a test for example, it would be important to spend more time on the basics, than the questions that only 5-10% of the cohort could answer. My…

One of the most important things a teacher can do for their student is to listen. Not to listen to think of the next response but to listen to understand. I believe as a teacher listening specifically to WHAT the student is asking not HOW they are asking it is one of the most valuable and important skills I've learned to develop. When a student is…

Education can be extremely enjoyable but, understandably, if students cannot grasp concepts and ideas, they quickly lose interest. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to show their students that learning can actually be fun by teaching them about new ways of thinking. This, in turn, would help them engage in the content of a…

Inside Calder ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aryan worked on representing and interpreting data using different types of graphs, then explored measures of centre including mean, median, mode, and range.

In Year 8, Jake focused on algebraic expressions—learning how to collect like terms and expand brackets step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sarah practised applying the Pythagoras theorem to solve problems involving right-angled triangles and was introduced to basic trigonometry concepts like sine, cosine, and tangent using SOH CAH TOA.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students faced challenges with test-taking processes, especially under timed conditions in mathematics.

For example, one Year 10 student "needed more practice being focused on task and timed," leading to rushed working during trigonometry revision.

A Year 8 learner struggled with interpreting worded problems—"difficulty understanding certain words" left some questions unanswered in assessments.

At the primary level, another student hesitated with multiplication tables when put under test pressure, slowing down progress through number facts.

In Year 12, over-reliance on a CAS calculator caused hesitation recalling formulas without support; confidence wavered as unfamiliar topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Calder Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who used to freeze when facing trigonometry questions—last session, she confidently identified opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse sides and could calculate missing angles with little prompting.

In Year 11, another student showed new independence by spotting algebraic errors on his own and fixing them immediately, rather than waiting for guidance as he did before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who had previously needed step-by-step help surprised her tutor by working through mixed fraction addition solo and checking her own answers for mistakes.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Overnewton Anglican Community College - Canowindra Campus.
