I think the most important thing for a tutor to do is to help instil confidence in a student, by walking through problems step by step until the student reaches a sense of understanding, and of wanting to learn more, as well as having the confidence to ask questions and clarify their knowledge. I have strong subject knowledge and the ability to…

As a high school leaver, I consider providing support and trust as well as accurate academic knowledge to be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Students do have teachers at school, therefore, the job of a tutor is to revise and trigger the knowledge of students, letting them realise their potential. I have physical and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is provide a judgment-free, open space where students feel comfortable asking any question - even those that may seem obvious. This not only builds a strong rapport with the student but also helps solidify their understanding. My biggest strength would be my ability to listen to the student. I believe it's…

I think its most important to listen and consider your students by asking questions, attentively listening to their responses to determine if they have underlying misunderstandings or misconceptions about the material. By letting a student explain the topic in their own words, I can diagnose the issue and perhaps offer a new perspective on how I…

When I was at school, my favourite teachers were always the relatable ones who were genuinely interested in me, my hobbies and my life. This connection is important for many reasons, not only to be a good tutor but to also be a confidant in times of crisis. In the past I have worked with children who had special needs. Being close to the student…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students can…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to discipline them and give them emotional support when they make mistakes. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is actually pay attention to how a student is thinking, not just if they're getting the answer right or wrong. A lot of the time you can tell where the misunderstanding is just by the way they’re approaching a question. So being able to pick that up and respond in the moment is really…

The most important things a tutor can do are build confidence, make concepts genuinely understandable, and adapt to the student’s needs—because once a student believes they can do it and actually understands the “why,†their results improve naturally. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is build confidence and spark an interest for learning. I would do this by encouraging a growth mindset and applying school concepts to the real world to show students that school learning does relate to the real world and doesn't just remain in the books. This is something I personally found…

Provide guidance and attention that he missed during his regular school environment. As tutors, we need to determine the needs of our students. For example, if a student is brilliant, they only need guidance; if a student is good, they need motivation or push for the next stage; but if a student is struggling, then they need mentoring. I am…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them the formulaic way of how to study. There is a set procedure that is unique to every individual and subject of how to fully understand and apply various concepts. Once one is able to find that procedure and develop it, they are able to learn much more in their given subject. In…

It is important to be confident and patient with your student which will allow them to feel more confident in their work. It is important to be a good listener to know how the student is feeling, concerns, or questions they may have. Set a goal setting for a student to achieve and implement incentives if needed to motivate students. Having a…

Inside Canley HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Elena practised interpreting column graphs in data topics and worked on simplifying algebraic expressions by collecting like terms.

In Year 8, Elizabeth reviewed surds and indices for an upcoming test, focusing on index laws and using worked examples.

For a younger student, Year 5 Liam concentrated on consolidating addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills to strengthen his basic number fluency through repeated practice.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, one student regularly skipped showing working for algebra and linear equations, which led to sign errors that went unnoticed until answers were checked. "She jumped straight to the answer and made mistakes," a tutor observed after reviewing her homework.

A Year 5 learner avoided attempting worded division problems in class, feeling overwhelmed by their complexity; this meant valuable practice was missed.

In Year 11, forgetting formulas for area of shapes led another student to leave school homework unfinished without even reading through the question.

For several younger students, not memorizing multiplication tables slowed down all further calculation work and left them reliant on fingers or trial-and-error—making later topics much harder to access confidently.

Recent Achievements

One Canley Heights tutor noticed Tanja began actively checking her own answers and tackled over half her assessment independently—where she'd previously hesitated to work without support.

Another secondary student, Emily, showed a real shift by asking for more sample problems on simultaneous equations after struggling with the difference between substitution and elimination; last session she solved over half correctly compared to just a few before.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 maths, Liam started using his own chosen strategies to tackle multiplication questions rather than waiting for hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Whitlam Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Canley Heights Public School.
