As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

So far I have found several factors that make for good tutors. Firstly building a strong and personal relationship with the student is very important as the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor can add essential ingredients for students to learn and grow. Secondly, communication and collaboration with the student,…

From my experience, the most important thing/skill as a tutor is to understand what students are not understanding. I believe that the most effective way to increase academic score/grade is to find the weakness/ topics that we do not quite get. Tutors should find those in students quickly and resolve it by teaching effectively. One of the biggest…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a enriching and safe learning environment for their tutee. Encouraging students while also providing deep guidance to the student are what contribute to this. I tend to find the people learn best when they enjoy learning instead of through academic pressure. While pressure can form diamonds, it…

It's also important to boost their confidence so they believe in themselves and stay motivated to learn. Creating a friendly and open environment where they…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students develop confidence and a genuine interest in the subject. When students enjoy learning and understand why concepts matter, they're more motivated to improve. In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. In the end, my goal will be to make the student the expert and…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

Local Reviews

We had Claire coming in to give tutoring to our daughter last Friday. It went very well and we were very happy with the result.
William, Carina Heights

Inside Carina HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jackson practised timestables for recall and worked on place value, also spending time improving handwriting.

In Year 9, Ella revised rearranging algebraic expressions to make a pronumeral the subject and substituted values into these expressions, extending briefly to cross multiplication.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Riley focused on financial mathematics topics, including compound interest and interpreting real-world scenarios from the next unit in line with QCAA guidelines.

Recent Challenges

Often distracted, rushing both handwriting and mental calculations; "he drifted in and out of concentration, had a lot of energy and needed to move his body a bit." This led to mixed-up numbers or missing steps during multiplication and division tasks.

In Year 10 science, not consistently reviewing feedback meant errors lingered in balancing chemical equations across sessions.

For a senior English student, incomplete drafts and delays seeking teacher comments slowed assignment progress—one note read: "Waiting on feedback for assignment."

When unfamiliar worded maths questions appeared (Year 9), hesitation set in until explicit prompting was given.

Recent Achievements

One Carina Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after typically second-guessing himself and relying on constant help, managed to complete several linear equations independently for the first time—he only checked in once before confidently working through unfamiliar problems alone.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student mastered mole conversions and demonstrated solid understanding of stoichiometry after struggling with these calculations last term.

For a younger learner, reading aloud was previously met with hesitation; now she tackles longer passages smoothly and even volunteers to read new sections without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carindale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whites Hill State College.
