The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

As a tutor, the most important thing is to create a safe space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It promotes learning and makes sure that every student feels valued. Tutors should also engage students in their learning and help them realise their full potential. I am patient, empathetic, and committed to…

Supporting the student and building their confidence is very important, as the belief that you are capable and have a strong grasp of the material is essential to success. I will also take the time to communicate with the student to develop a study plan that is suited to their level and leans on their strengths. My strengths are in English,…

In my opinion, the first thing a tutor can do to help a student is to first listen to them and take their concerns very seriously. It may be a very simple doubt, but the moment they accept that we are ready to listen to their concerns, we automatically grab their attention and build up a rapport with them. Another critical aspect of tutoring is to…

- Be patient with them - Flexibility - allow more room for the student to ask questions and respond to the material - Collaborative - connect with the child and cater to their needs rather than telling them what to do - Communicative - be clear with them and of your expectations with them In terms of what makes me a good candidate for this…

The most important thing, according to me, is that the tutor is able to sympathise with the student. More often, in a class full of people, a student can feel like they're the only one who's falling behind. A tutor can help the student get out of that sort of thinking, and personally, at a one-on-one level, be involved in helping the student out…

Being patient and understanding. Not every student learns the same or is a carbon copy of the others. Treating the student with respect and understanding are essential to a positive experience for both the student and the tutor. As a tutor, I believe I am great at meeting the student where they are at. Before a session I attempt to understand how…

It’s not just about giving answers, but helping them develop the thinking process to solve problems independently. I consider the most important things a tutor can do is not just to help the student understand the subject and hand, but also to inspire and motivate the student so they become more passionate about learning and strive to put in their best effort. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable about admitting the lessons that the student really doesn't understand, and eventually make that student feel confident by equipping her/him with methods to break down and analyse the problem in digestible steps. I firmly believe a tutor should not spoon feed a student; instead, let him/her attempt…

A tutor's role goes beyond teaching academic content. Creating a positive learning environment, adapting to diverse learning styles, and offering clear explanations are crucial. A tutor should be more than just a teacher to them, they should be their friend, their go-to person in case of doubts and someone who's always willing to listen while…

I have a positive attitude even when the student is wrong, I correct them by not saying that they were wrong but by picking up the same topic and explaining it in the correct manner. Be honest. This helps to establish rapport and trust, the two most critical elements to a successful tutoring relationship. Be flexible. Learn not to show annoyance…

A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
