The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

The most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and supportive space where the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Building trust is key. A tutor should also help the student develop independent learning strategies, so they feel empowered to tackle challenges on their own over time. It's not just about…

I firmly believe that teaching them the core knowledge of the concepts is one of the most important things. So, they can build strong mathematical reasoning skills. Also, giving them courage feedback is extremely important to help them feel confident and better developed their STEM skills. Which helps them enjoy the study. Also, providing them…

Aside from helping a student work on topics they might otherwise struggle with, the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student believe that they can succeed in the topics or subjects they struggle with. I make it a point to never pass judgment on another student or make them feel bad about themselves because they are stuck on a topic,…

I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Another thing that is important to me is not belittling the student or making them feel "stupid" for not understanding, but instead relating to them and helping them find a different way to solve…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. A tutor should also have a strong understanding of the subject so they can break lessons or problems into simpler terms, while still making the class fun and interactive. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence and create a safe space for asking questions. Looking back, the best professors I had were those who encouraged independent thinking and went beyond the textbook. In the long run, this approach helps students become more adaptable, curious, and capable of…

I believe a tutor's most important roles are personalised understanding, building self-belief and empowering independent learning. It's crucial to understand each student, their challenges and motivations to learn. A great tutor adapts their approach to fit the student's needs. Building confidence is vital, helping students see their own…

Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

I think the most important thing you can do as a teacher is to equip your students with the means to learn. There are skills to learn anything. As a teacher, you need to teach your students knowledge as well as show them how to learn. Once students have mastered the method of learning and at the same time gained the confidence to learn, they can…

Firstly, a tutor has to be able to understand the student's needs and then personalise a learning plan/ style that works for the student - one size does not fit all! Secondly, the tutor needs to guide the student not get them to parrot generic question answers. It's about building the students confidence up, through positive encouragement, and…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
