My main goal as a tutor is watch my students improve. Hence the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be their support system. To encourage them during challenging times and to always keep their spirits up so that they will always be motivated to do their best. I am patient, I explain concepts well and as slowly as the student…

The most important things would be to not only effectively teach the student and make them understand/ learn better, but also impart important study skills, that the tutor has learnt through his/ her personal academic experiences, to equip the student to be able to perform well even in the future. I think one of my biggest strengths is my calm…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to first understand the student's current level and their learning goals. This helps in preparing tailored lessons that cater to their specific needs. It's crucial to recognize the student's learning pace and strengths, and to adapt teaching methods accordingly, whether they…

To adapt to the learning pace of a student and make suitable plan for the student in order for the student to learn most efficiently while not being overloaded. I can teach smart students in "smart" ways using shortcuts that they enjoy and can also provide easy understandable step by step methods for student that tend to be stuck on hard problems…

I think make a safe environment to learn because if a student hesitates to ask anything from the tutor then theres no point of having such a teacher. I always try to connect academic things with real life experiences and make it easy to learn for…

100% Motivation and ensuring they feel like they have a support structure whose best interest is to see them succeed. Too many people in my year have lacked motivation to study effectively and as a result, their grades faltered. The school proceeded to threaten to kick them out of their ATAR classes, which only worked to further demoralise them…

Initially adapting to the student's learning pace is one of the most important things a tutor can do. Creating a supportive environment for the students so that they can ask questions comfortably is also important as it lets them make mistakes and therefore learn from their mistakes and offering personalised advice and guidance goes a long way in…

The most important thing can be to understand and relate to the student as much as possible, for example understand their problems, think from their perspective and teach them in a style which best suits them. My strengths are that my experience with teachers and fellow students is very fresh. I have also achieved the highest grade in one of the…

I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

In my opinion, guiding the student to being able to help himself or herself is the most crucial aspect in teaching. In other words, teaching the student to learn things on their own is what makes teaching so powerful. Firstly I am patient with students to a certain degree. This allows me to make the most out of the time I teach and contribute to…

I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

In my opinion, a tutor should foster a safe and encouraging space for learning, build students’ confidence, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. It’s about empowering students, not just teaching content. In fact, implementing teaching strategies to adapt to the student's learning style is crucial for better comprehension.…

First of all, transpositional thinking is really important. For students, they're the first time to learn some concepts while tutors have been dealing with the same concepts for at least several years. So a tutor must think from a student's perspective to find a better way to teach students. Secondly, a tutor should be able to check students'…

I want my students to be able not only to learn the given subjects/materials but also to learn how to learn. It might sound insignificant, but students will be lifelong learners, so they have to find out their learning styles, how to learn, how to manage their learning, etc. That's why it is important for me to also help them learn about…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. Regardless of their initial ability, once a student begins to believe in themself they will feel more confident to try more or try new things to…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

Inside Carlton NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Dylan worked through simplifying and calculating surds, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using homework examples.

For Year 10, Favour practised solving simultaneous equations and tackled linear graphs word problems.

Meanwhile, Queen (Year 10) focused on applying linear equations to solve worded questions involving real-life scenarios and reinforced her skills with extra practice from homework exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant less time reinforcing word problem strategies and missed chances to clarify errors.

In Year 10 algebra, skipping written working led to "small mistakes trying to solve in his head instead of using the paper."

For a senior student, messy or incomplete notes in calculus made back-checking difficult—one tutor observed, "she struggled recalling formulae under timed conditions because her notes were disorganized."

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student hesitated to explain steps aloud during fractions work; this avoidance made it harder to spot where confusion began.

Missed practice and incomplete written working often left gaps visible only at assessment time.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Carlton North noticed some genuine breakthroughs recently. One Year 11 student who previously hesitated with VCE statistics questions has started working through past exam problems independently, showing strong problem-solving skills and taking real initiative after just a few sessions.

In another case, a Year 9 student who used to struggle with interpreting information from Venn diagrams was able to confidently explain her reasoning out loud and even picked up on her own mistakes using back-checking strategies.

Meanwhile, a primary school student now tackles word problems with much more confidence than before, completing all the set tasks without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carlton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Princes Hill Primary School.
