The most important thing or a challenge for a tutor is to involve a student in a subject not just for it's technicality but for its application in real life. Therefore it's important to find the bridge between what you study and real life in not all but most cases to keep studies interesting. If not, find a funny way or create a situation that…

One of the major thing a tutor can provide to its students is motivation to achieve their tasks. Personally I performed very well in school and college because of my tutor who used to teach me. He taught me that I am capable of soo anything if I want to do so. I have a positive attitude towards my students, specifically I have good verbal and…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding with the student, helping them solve and understand their current subject problems. Furthermore it is important to help the student develop skills to be able to tackle future problems on their own. My strengths as a tutor come from the in-depth experience I have gathered in my subjects…

Most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is being kind and patient. A teacher should always be creative and adopt to individual students learning style. As a good teacher you should never be condescending. I have the ability to motivate students who have no interest in their subject and I made it fun and interesting for them to get…

A tutor must be able to induce interest of the subject in the student so that they appreciate the beauty of the subject instead of just learning to pass the exams. I believe I have the required knowledge to explain concepts to students so that they can grasp them. I also believe I have the necessary patience required for all tutors to…

Not only help them understand a topic they need assistance with, but to change their perspective and resilience to challenges they may face in the future. To make them see that anything is possible no matter how hard it may seem. No one can make me give up on helping a student unless they themselves opt out, and my communication skills (knowing 4…

Giving constructive feedback. Answer any questions the student has. Give advice and direction for general exam strategies. In uni or highschool, many students complain that the teachers or lecturers aren't able to explain properly or give any useful feedbacks. Therefore I think the 3 items above are the most important in helping the student to…

Inside Carrum DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Natalia worked on converting fractions to decimals and practiced simplifying fractions, focusing on step-by-step written solutions.

For Year 8, Jay tackled solving linear equations and explored finding angles using trigonometric ratios.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Marcus concentrated on expanding binomial products in quadratic expressions and factorising trinomials, with an emphasis on clear working out at each stage.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were evident across year levels.

In Year 8 mathematics, one student's working out was often unclear—"he needs to make his working out clear to gain full marks", and in algebra, skipping written steps led to confusion when checking answers.

In VCE English, a senior student focused too narrowly on details in article analysis, making it "harder to elaborate on certain areas," and struggled to name techniques in written work despite verbal understanding.

Homework completion was also inconsistent; for example, one secondary student did not submit assigned maths tasks, leaving gaps before the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Carrum Downs tutor noticed a big shift in Charlotte's attitude—she used to get distracted, but now she sticks with maths tasks for longer stretches and even asked for help when she was unsure, instead of giving up.

In Year 10, one student had always found algebraic factorisation confusing, but after several sessions working through examples together, they managed to factorise trinomials independently and could explain why it's the opposite of expanding.

Meanwhile, Natalia (Year 12) struggled last term to support her essay arguments; now she's deconstructing articles into sub-arguments on her own and picking out relevant quotes without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carrum Downs Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joachim's School.
