As a tutor, I believe it is important to improve their weaknesses so that they are a more well-rounded student. A tutor should also teach students a problem-solving mindset which can be applied to any subject, making them better academically in all fields. Having just graduated, I have in-depth knowledge of how VCE works and what students can do…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to motivate them. The process of learning can never be linear. Some students may understand the concept just by having to listen/read the explanation once. Some may understand after going through examples. And others may struggle with the concepts even after going through the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Tutors should allow students to articulate exactly where they believe they are struggling, and work towards their students' learning goals at their own pace. My biggest strength as a tutor is my ability to tailor my teaching style as per each student's needs. I…

The key things to being a great tutor include understanding, patience and commitment. I believe I have all three attributes and will work hard to improve myself as I take on this new position if given the opportunity. I think my strengths consist of knowing what pace I should be at to teach someone as efficiently as possible. As a current student…

The most important thing a tutor can offer is support and patience. A lot of students lacking the confidence think that they are not able to understand maths by themselves but with a tutor's help and support they can build on that confidence and with time realize they are fully capable by themselves. I believe my strength lies in explaining one…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build confidence, provide clarity, and encourage curiosity. Building confidence is essential because students often struggle more with self-doubt than with the material itself. By being encouraging and celebrating progress, a tutor can help students trust their abilities and…

Be friendly to the student, show the student that they are confident in them, allow the student to think for him/herself. A tutor should understand that each…

The most important thing for me is if a tutor is empathetic. By this, I mean it is easy to ATTEMPT to explain a topic if you know the topic well. Whether the attempt was successful or not requires empathy. To be able to put yourself in the shoes of someone who has not even heard of or comprehended the topic. My strengths are that if I am confident…

Brandon has given Max some helpful tips and he has been patient in his anticipation of Max understanding the concepts they have covered thus far. Max likes Brandon and can relate to him. I know it has only been a couple of weeks but have no doubt the one on one contact is helping at this stage.

Inside ChelseaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ella focused on working with fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) as well as solving equations involving a few extra steps.

Year 10 student Max tackled methods for factorising quadratics and was introduced to logarithms through guided practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack worked on rules for differentiating polynomials and applied these skills to find tangent and normal lines using graphs of derivatives.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working through non-routine quadratic and function problems often avoided showing full working, especially when identifying which method of factorising quadratics is required for which question—as one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to confusion when revisiting solutions.

In Year 8 algebra sessions, messy written work made it difficult to check calculations or spot arithmetic slips.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student regularly forgot to bring key materials for subtraction practice; this meant time was lost setting up before starting any sums.

Recent Achievements

One Chelsea tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to struggle with worded problems now quickly converting scenarios into equations and even drawing diagrams without prompting.

In a recent high school session, a Year 11 student who'd hesitated with polynomial long division was able to perform it smoothly and then independently identify key points of cubics in point of inflection form.

Meanwhile, one younger primary learner, Asha, surprised her tutor by solving addition problems in her head much faster than before—she finished her work quickly and correctly for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Patterson Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakwood School-Oakwood School VCAL Campus.
