Help the student overcome their fear, and develop new skills to improve and work on their weaknesses. Try to seek help when they need it and learn how to deal with new challenges everyday without fear. Communication is the key for everything. And I’m easy going with people and I’m also easy to share things with. So I believe the boy/girl…

Help the student visualise or truly understand the concept instead of having to memorise the equations. If a student understands the concept, it could become intuitive for the student to know how to use the equation. One other important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and empathetic, build the student's confidence and…

Listen to their problems and try to understand their perspective when it comes to studies and course works. Be some one they can rely upon with their intellectual and educational problems. My strengths as a tutor is that I am friendly towards the students and I try to empathize with the students as to where they are now and where I have been when…

I think the most important thing tutor can provide for their students is new perspectives both on learning and their subjects. A tutor should help the student understand topics they struggle with and add to the teaching from teachers and help them finding new ways to learn. While simultaneously help the student find enjoyment for the subject which…

One of the important things a math tutor can do for students is constantly testing them with the knowledge they have already absorbed in the past. Questions need to be changed, but concepts need to be practiced repetitively. The other important thing tutor can do to help students is organizing notes. Math contains a sphere of knowledge (formula/…

1) listen to the student and the parent. students should be the ones doing the most talking and asking questions. Tutors job is to listen to the student and give them the help they need 2) help the student gain confidence in maths but also in study in general. Often if a student improves in one area it also carries over to other subjects. The…

I think it is very important to be present not only as a tutor but also as a mentor in a student's life. The role of a tutor extends beyond just delivering content to ensuring a student develops good study habits necessary for lifelong learning. The most important thing is providing motivation and encouraging the student that they can do it. I am…

Passion and sympathy are the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Always remember to think from the student's point of view can establish more effective communication, recognising what we need to solve the problem encountered. It's important for every tutor to believe in their student. Every child has the potential to excel and the most important thing for a tutor to do is to recognise that potential and help it reach its right fruition. Patience and empathy are essential when working with children, as is creating an environment for them to develop problem solving…

A tutor should help a student build genuine understanding, not just memorise steps. That means breaking concepts down clearly, guiding them through the logic behind each idea, and checking that they truly grasp the foundations before moving forward. A tutor should also provide steady support and structure, encouraging good study habits and showing…

I think a tutor, in a way, needs to be like a parent. Instead of being too harsh on one end of the spectrum or being too 'nice' on the other end, it is important for tutors to be able to temper a balance of both. They should be firm, but still show care for the student. Care is extremely important - if the student does not feel that the tutor…

A tutor should make their students feel that they are in a supportive, safe space, and that there are no stupid questions. They should be able to demonstrate how to solve problems by example, gradually building up the student's confidence to do these problems on their own. I am empathetic and a good listener so I am able to get a good feeling of…

Inside CheltenhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Jack reviewed Ohm's Law and the differences between series and parallel electric circuits, also addressing questions from his school work.

For Year 11 Mia, lessons focused on algebraic factorisation of linear expressions and coordinate geometry—calculating midpoints, gradients, and distances between two points.

Meanwhile, Year 11 Olivia worked through exam revision covering quadratic equations, probability problems, graphing equations, and aspects of financial mathematics.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student found aligning number places in decimal calculations confusing, particularly when working on clock questions—her written layout sometimes made it hard to check work for errors.

In Year 8, one student often relied heavily on notes and formula sheets during revision; he wasn't able to do some of the revision questions without looking at his notes, which slowed progress with algebra and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student had incomplete homework in statistics, meaning less time could be spent practicing exam-style problems. Gaps from missing or late schoolwork lingered into revision sessions, especially before assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Cheltenham tutor noted a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after previously hesitating to ask for help, now openly voices questions whenever she's confused—especially during challenging proofs.

In Year 12 maths, Levi struggled with expanding and factorising equations at first, but recently completed all set problems independently and accurately.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary years, who found division daunting before, has started grouping objects into sets using diagrams and then confidently writing out the matching equation without prompting—something she would have avoided just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Epping Heights Public School.
