Modern curriculum is mostly based on a thought process that works for most students. But not for all, and school teachers don't usually have the capacity to take care of all the students individually. That's where a chemistry tutor can help. Everybody thinks about and understand scientific ideas and theories in their own, personal way. A tutor…

I think that a chemistry tutor should be approachable - the student shouldn't be afraid to say that they don't understand something. After all, the tutor is there to help the student through any new concepts and ensure that they are taught in an easy to understand way. The tutor should be able to adapt to the student's most effective learning…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

It is important that a chemistry tutor be supportive and encouraging of students in their learning, to never underestimate the potential of their students and believe in them. I am able to look at topics and break them down into their simpler, more understandable components, developing a full and comprehensive understanding. I am also…

To assist them in the holistic learning process. Tutors should be able to provide competent and effective guidance to their students by not only helping them solve a problem or complete a task, but also providing them the tools required for independent learning capabilities. I believe my strengths as a tutor includes the ability to empathise with…

since the goal of a chemistry tutor is to teach the student I believe that the most important things tutors can do for students Is teach the underlying concept as well as the method to solving a problem, this allows the student to apply what they have learnt in different circumstances if the same underlying concept is used. I have excellent…

A tutor should always be available for their student. According to me, a chemistry tutor should always try to convey their message as politely as they can which should be in a language a student can easily understand I am confident and have great leadership skills. Being myself a student I can easily understand the mindset of a…

I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is be able to teach them skills that they can use in their studies after they are finished with a tutor. Obviously it is a tutors job to teach them the task at hand, but I believe a great tutor is able to teach the student skills that will allow them to do better in school…

The best thing a chemistry tutor can teach a student is not the subject content itself but the way to approach learning concepts as these is vital skills that will allow the student in his future studies and in other subjects as well. Relatability and understanding- I am quite effective at identifying the underlying problem a person has to study,…

Be supportive, offer the one-on-one help that they may not be getting at school and being able to explain concepts or ideas in a slightly different way to their usual teacher to give them a different perspective and way of thinking through tough questions or activities. Be a role model and show them that it’s ok not to not be able to understand something at the beginning, but there is always a way around it to better their understandings. It’s also important for a chemistry tutor to help students reach their goals, whether that be getting certain grades or finishing an assignment. I’m a patient person and…

The personalisation of learning is the most important thing I consider a tutor can do for their student. The most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Inside ClarendonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia focused on applying the sine and cosine rules in trigonometry problems, as well as tackling exam-style probability questions.

Year 11 student Josh worked through concepts of compound interest and appreciation, plus explored how inflation affects financial decisions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Emma completed a psychology assignment analyzing research methods and developed her major research project proposal with a focus on structuring arguments clearly.

Recent Challenges

Several Year 8–10 students in maths were repeatedly reminded to "show all working out and remember units"—as one note put it, "Needs to show all working out and remember to write the units."

In these cases, missing steps or units led to marks lost in factorisation, decimal division, and trigonometry questions.

A Year 12 student's research project feedback highlighted that "overall layout of the presentation needed some improvement," resulting in ideas being hard to follow during class discussion.

In English (Year 9), a lack of structure in paragraph writing made it difficult for meaning and analysis to come through clearly.

Recent Achievements

One Clarendon tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled to connect equations with their graphs now independently explains graph shifts, even helping peers when they're stuck.

A Year 9 student, who used to rush through statistics questions and make small errors, recently took the initiative to check her work step-by-step and corrected mistakes before moving on.

In a recent primary session, a Year 4 learner who often hesitated during presentations gave a clear recount using new devices and didn't need prompting to share her ideas out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Aberfoyle Park (The Hub) Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clarendon Primary School.
