The most important thing I can do is continuously adapt to a student’s evolving learning needs. Students are at a crucial stage of cognitive development, and their understanding can shift from one lesson to the next. A tutor must assess their learning style in every session, adjusting explanations and approaches accordingly. What worked well in…

By breaking difficult subjects down into basic components through simplifying and clarifying them, this will assist in building the students' interest towards studying in a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is empower a student by making them believe in their ability. My strengths are that I can empathise with students as I have been in their positions. In addition, I believe I have a strength in clear communication, which is important because that helps me explain solutions to students and help them understand…

To be a good tutor, I feel like you need to be personally connected with your students. Each student has their own unique situation whether it be family or academic and as a tutor, you must be able to work with what your students have. After all, I believe that is the role of a tutor; to help students build upon what they have and then help them…

A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

The most important thing a tutor can provide to a student is their time. It goes without saying that all children are different and learn through alternative ways/modes. Patience, perseverance and continual tailored support from a tutor is crucial in allowing a student to understand certain concepts. By having a tutor that is continually readily…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. I believe that is essential for a tutor to establish and master the “groundwork’’ and fundamental concepts with the students before moving on to more complicated concepts. For subjects like Mathematics and Physics, new knowledge is very commonly built on knowledge that you have learnt before. As a result, tutors need to make sure that…

Additionally, helping the student approach the subject in such a manner that the student's abilities in the subject overall increase, to improve rigour and precision when it comes to mathematics. Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. I think confidence is key, it’s not about rigorous testing, its about ensuring that they have confidence to solve the problem, focusing on teaching the method in different ways. True learning happens when students build the tools to think for themselves. In my experience, the most vital role of a tutor is fostering self-efficacy through precise diagnostics and a supportive environment. Rather than just assisting with immediate coursework, I look past surface errors to pinpoint root learning gaps and adapt materials to how…

Inside Clemton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Emily practised adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator and previewed long division, while also working on understanding maths in word problems through homework tasks.

In Year 8, Lucas focused on factorising quadratic equations and revising how to use the quadratic formula to solve them, including discussing what "roots" mean for parabolas.

Year 9 student Sarah worked on manipulating linear equations by making a variable the subject and used tables and graphs to explore relationships between variables.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student avoided writing working for long division, preferring mental methods; this led to mistakes he couldn't check or fix—"He needs more practice to ensure he follows the new method instead of depending on his older method."

In Year 11 trigonometry, a tendency to regurgitate formulas without showing process meant errors went unnoticed.

For a Year 3 student, skipping homework and resisting new ways of setting out sums blocked progress with fractions.

Another in Year 7 hesitated to ask questions during algebra revision, missing feedback that would have clarified misconceptions and built confidence.

Recent Achievements

One Clemton Park tutor noticed a big change in Willa, a high school student who used to get stuck on wordy maths problems—she now asks questions when unsure and recently solved several tricky ones on her own using new strategies.

Cooper, also in high school, shifted from waiting for hints to actively looking for solutions and tackling quadratic equations with much more independence than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who previously needed help reading longer passages managed to read an entire book out loud solo this week, only stumbling over a couple of words.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clemton Park Public School.
