According to me it's very important to make sure that a student feels comfortable in my surroundings and doesn't hesitate to ask questions and doubts when required. This is why I believe it's important to teach in a friendly environment. I am usually also available to students out of hours to answer their last minute questions before exams, if any…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to instill confidence in them. They should be able to encourage and motivate a student despite any struggles or failures that come their way because I believe every single mistake or failure is just a pillar to success. Allowing a student to develop a love for learning is one…

I believe a tutor's most important roles are personalised understanding, building self-belief and empowering independent learning. It's crucial to understand each student, their challenges and motivations to learn. A great tutor adapts their approach to fit the student's needs. Building confidence is vital, helping students see their own…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

I think that a good tutor should be able to inspire and motivate their student to do well. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

Making mistakes feel safe. If a student is afraid to get something wrong, they'll never actually engage with the material; they'll try to avoid being caught not knowing. The most important thing a tutor can do is create an environment where asking for help early feels like the smart move, not the embarrassing one. Because the longer you wait, the…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
