I think the most important thing a tutor can do is reinforce knowledge of taught elements in school and clarify any doubts the student may have. While completing my VCE, I had a Study Score of 40 in further maths so I am confident in my maths ability I have been studying maths at university in my engineering course so I believe I can help the…

Empathy. Teaching is fundamentally a transfer of knowledge, but that transfer only works if you first understand how the student thinks, where they're stuck, and what's making them anxious or disengaged. A good tutor adapts their explanation to the student's learning style rather than repeating the same approach that didn't work the first time.…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

A tutor can be kind and patient with the student and open to any kind of question, however basic it might be and not ridicule the child. The tutor can also repeat the same thing until the student had finally grasped the concept so that they are completely confident. Having grown up around teachers, I have learnt a lot from them. I have learnt to…

The most important thing as a tutor is to be patient and understanding. As someone who has gone through the same thing, I'm relatable. Students might have a hard time in class or something outside that might affect their studying, and as a tutor, I believe that we should hold students' hands and guide them through the school years. My strength is…

A tutor's greatest contribution is to give students confidence in their upcoming studies. In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. I think that a tutor should be able to meet the individual needs of a student and present the content in an easily understandable format for them especially in the field of mathematics where there are often multiple pathways to achieving an answer. Try to understand what teaching method is effective for a certain type of student because I believe we cannot just apply one particular approach to all kinds of students without adjusting and modifying it to accommodate their personal needs. One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
