The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to plan ahead and to revise to ensure that the student is able to complete previously covered topics. My strengths as a tutor are my planning ability and improvisation which may be necessary if the student is behind on work or the parents change what they wish to focus…

I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

While helping students learn is obviously important, the psychological and social aspects of tutoring are arguably much more important. A good tutor will help give their students the support and connection they need so that they can become better, more confident and independent learners. A good tutor will make their students feel comfortable,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate a student's success, whether it is big or small. It builds a student's confidence and motivation to keep learning. For example, I would acknowledge their success or completion of goal right away with specific praise, like "I'm really proud of how you stayed focused on that…

Develop their love/passion for a particular subject/field. For young minds, effective tutoring/teaching is extremely important as it makes them aware of their career options and shapes them for good future prospects. When tutoring is improper, a student might quickly lose interest in a subject area which otherwise they may prove to be good at. I…

I believe a tutor must be resilient in their learning. Teaching the students that there are many ways one can develop their learning. Tutors should not give up in teaching the students that if they do not understand the content. My strengths as a tutor are: Knowledge on the syllabus. Personalisation. In a classroom, the teacher's attention is divided and the material needs to be taught in ways that the majority understands. However, each student understands and learns differently so having it taylored to the individual (figuring out what they know, what they don't know and what they misunderstood) builds the foundation of…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

Encouraging the student to see their potential as something that can only grow from that point onwards, and telling them that even if the process of creating an environment and mindset where they can learn is a long and arduous one, it will improve with time and the skills learnt along the way will stay with them for the rest of their school lives…

I think the most crucial part of any tutoring experience is to make sure that the student knows that the tutor is there for them and will not get frustrated if mess something up. If the tutor comes off as condescending or annoyed at a lack of progress, it can allow the student to put added pressure on him/herself or create an aversion to learning…

Among the most important things a tutor can do for a student is that a tutor must be able to understand a student's learning style so that the student would be able to learn the material in a way that is analogous to their mode of synthesising knowledge. A tutor must do this all the while being open and kind and most especially warm towards the…

Help them to understand that they can learn. That they understand that teaching is one aspect of the education process and the other is learning. That all students have the capacity to learn especially if the teacher is prepared to apply their best effort to offering those students a way to understand the information. This can be assisted if both…

Inside ClontarfTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Jaida focused on surface area and volume formulas, then practised strategies for algebraic fractions and coordinate geometry.

For Year 9, Amelie worked through surds—including simplifying, multiplying/dividing, and rationalising denominators—alongside revision of trigonometry concepts like bearings and angle calculations using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Lilly strengthened her addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills by tackling homework errors and used times tables games to boost recall speed for upcoming topics.

Recent Challenges

He needs to keep using steps and formulas provided, after seeing working skipped in algebra problems—this led to confusion when reviewing errors later.

In Year 11, one student arrived without a calculator or notes for trigonometry revision; the missing materials slowed progress, as key steps couldn't be practiced independently.

A Year 6 lesson highlighted the need for clearer written working: Ensuring she writes down questions and working out in a way she can understand would help her revisit tricky area and volume problems before tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clontarf recently noticed some great shifts across a few students. One Year 11 student, who previously hesitated to speak up, now regularly asks questions when tackling tricky calculus problems and even challenged the tutor on certain methods to better understand the "why" behind solutions.

A Year 9 student surprised herself by completing her maths assignment ahead of schedule for the first time, showing new independence and avoiding last-minute stress.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student started correcting her own mistakes while practicing times tables—where she used to just wait for hints—finishing her worksheet without needing prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Balgowlah Heights Public School.
