Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

The most important thing would be to push them to be passionate and to be interested in what they are doing, and to help them want to improve at what they're learning. I find myself to be very relatable to students, likely due to my age, and able to convey information in a way that makes it easy to understand for a younger…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

Try make tutoring fun, students no matter how hard you try will not retain information and be willing to learn if they are really against it. So by presenting the content in a fun but still effective manner, it is bound to show results. The most important thing when it comes to content is to not spoon feed them with the right answers, you need…

Most importantly a teacher can create a safe learning environment where the child is not afraid to ask questions. Encouraging them to ask questions will make them more confident and as a teacher its my duty to make them feel like they can trust an rely on me. I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is create a space where the student feels completely comfortable being themselves. They should be able to openly say what they do and don’t understand without fear of judgment. This honesty is what allows us to help them in the best way possible. Beyond that, a tutor should always aim to build…

I feel that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to act as a source of information throughout their time of studying. I believe that a tutor should plan individually for each student to cater for their needs. Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses, and it should be the tutor's role to discover these and change their teaching approaches accordingly. A good tutor should be able to encourage the students to overcome setbacks and achieve their best…

I think understanding the student's capacity, strengths, and weaknesses plays a vital role in being a tutor, therefore, the tutor could implement a personalized system for each student. We are very happy with our experience so far. It was simple to arrange and there was no problem finding a tutor available at the time we needed. We chose EzyMath tutoring as it was the only company that didn't send endless texts and emails to get us to sign up. The tutor arrived on time and kept my daughter engaged on maths the entire hour. Although she doesn't love maths (yet) the look of pride on her face after each session has been amazing.

Inside CoburgTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ava practised addition and subtraction using a number line, and worked through NAPLAN-style word problems.

In Year 10, Jasmine focused on solving and rearranging algebraic equations as well as revising linear equations in preparation for her test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emmanuel explored circular functions—graphing sine and cosine—and tackled trigonometric equations to prepare for his upcoming CAT assessment.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student became overwhelmed when facing unfamiliar algebra problems and tended to freeze rather than attempt different strategies, as noted: "He easily gets overwhelmed when faced with an unfamiliar problem."

In Year 11 calculus, skipping careful reading of questions led to repeated errors during CATs; one tutor observed he "needed to read the question more carefully."

Meanwhile, a primary student working on subtraction sometimes forgot to borrow but quickly improved once reminded.

For a Year 8 student, untidy written work in dividing polynomials meant errors went unnoticed until final checks.

These moments often left students frustrated or second-guessing themselves mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg recently noticed Emmanuel, a Year 12 student, tackling complex numbers for the first time—a notoriously tricky topic—but he managed to grasp key ideas right away after struggling with similar advanced material last term.

Yvonne, also in high school, has shifted from relying on hints to independently placing angles and finding reference angles on the unit circle during calculus sessions.

Meanwhile, Jett in primary school explained multi-digit subtraction using an algorithm out loud—something he was hesitant to do before—and now confidently checks his own answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbell-Turnbull Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Islamic College of Sport.
