The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for students at their bad times and not ridicule them. If a student has a bad time and cannot fully focus on studies, a tutor should help them and understand that its not the person but the situation that is leading to this. A tutor should go to the full extent to help the student get better at…

I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Doing everything possible to get the true picture of the subject matter to the understanding of the student. A tutor is responsible for motivating a student in order to achieve excellent grades. A tutor does not only train a student academically but also guides them to the right path in life by sharing their own experiences. I would consider demonstrating openness and listening to the needs of a child to be a positive trait for a tutor. I am definitely…

Passion and patience will always come up first. No matter how good the strategy is, if a tutor doesn't have passion on teaching and patience to get along with students, students won't be able to improve efficiently. As a previous special education teacher, and currently a speech pathology student, I can understand that being patient plays an…

Along with the subject matter, we can motivate our students and generate interest in our field. A tutor can point out the mistakes made by student and can correct them. Impart upon a student not knowledge per se, but rather a desire to expand their own knowledge through self-directed learning. Learning and education should be a lifelong process, not one that ends when an individual completes their primary vocational education. Learning makes us grow and develop and look at things in different ways, and the desire…

I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

A tutor has to make sure a student enjoys the content they are learning that they want to improve rather than just being there because their parents made them take the tutoring. Inside ComoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on mastering multiplication tables up to 12 and practiced reading and drawing times on analog clocks.

For Year 8, Jessica focused on solving equations algebraically—showing all steps clearly—and revised lowest common denominators in fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam tackled index laws through targeted practice questions and explored exponential functions, applying rules to different sequences.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for a test struggled with time management—she ran out of time to check answers in algebra, so small sign errors went unnoticed.

In Year 8 maths, messy working and unclear layout led to confusion during fraction calculations, making it harder to spot calculation slips or follow the method.

For a Year 3 learner, organization was an issue; forgetting their math notebook meant important notes weren't recorded, impacting revision later.

Meanwhile, a senior student focused mostly on easy textbook questions in Venn Diagrams and neglected the tougher ones, missing out on vital exam practice.

Recent Achievements

One Como tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's willingness to do homework; after weeks of leaving tasks unfinished, he arrived at his session with practice questions completed and specific areas ready for discussion.

A Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for help came prepared this week with her own list of questions about index laws and even requested harder examples on scientific notation.

In primary, one student who'd been mixing up hours and minutes on an analog clock finally explained the difference without prompting, then drew the correct time twice in a row during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as South Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collier Primary School.
