I think the most important thing is to help a student build confidence, not just get through a problem. If they believe they can’t do it, nothing else works. I had self doubt right before my HSC exams, so I truly know how important confidence is and how strongly it affects a person’s performance. Second is to teach them how to think through a…

A tutoring environment differs from a school environment by the personal connection and the attention to detail from the tutor. As a tutor, I believe it is important to connect deeply with each student, paying close attention to if they fully understand each topic and if they feel confident and motivated with their work. I believe a personal…

To promote effective learning and bolster a student's academic progress, a tutor should consider the following actions: 1. Develop personalized teaching plans tailored to each student's learning foundations and pace. 2. Demonstrate enough patience and kindness, offering positive reinforcement and celebrating their accomplishments. 3. Ensure…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. Although raising marks is the main objective for tutors, they must be able to interact with the students and find their weak points and there is a limit to what they can teach. They must act as a pillar that can support their…

Teaching them how to study is the key. Helping them to get better grades is definitely important, but teaching them the method to study is more important. I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

The most important thing that anyone can do for their student is to have them realise that everyone started where they are starting, nobody was born knowing anything, and just because you don't understand a concept now, doesn't mean you won't ever understand it. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

Relatability is so important. We see a huge disconnect between teachers/tutors and students. I believe that an equal playing field with mutual respect creates a unique learning environment and nurtures encouragement. The student can see how the teacher got to where they are, and can realise that they, too, can learn these concepts just as those…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence, not just help them get the answer. It is essential that the student feels comfortable learning, and as a tutor I think it is our job to achieve this. Not only should the student feel relaxed while in class, they should start to gain interest in what they are learning. I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Robbie focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, then compared different fraction values using visual aids.

In Year 10, Claire worked through compound and simple interest calculations as well as interpreting compounded value tables for financial maths topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the declining-balance method of depreciation and reducing-balance loans, with practical examples to deepen understanding of financial mathematics concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's test performance revealed persistent timing issues—"still struggling to complete tests in the correct time frame"—with rushed endings leading to unfinished questions in algebra.

For Year 11 Physics, forgotten content after missed sessions resulted in gaps that "couldn't be covered quickly before the test," causing anxiety and confusion.

In Year 6 Maths, unorganized note-taking meant key formulas were missing when revising fractions.

Another senior student hesitated to write working out for worded problems: "He holds back in case he gets an answer wrong," so mistakes remained hidden and feedback couldn't be used effectively.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to ask for help, now actively seeking clarification whenever confused—a big change from just nodding along in earlier sessions.

A Year 11 student has started fixing mistakes independently after only one correction, where before he would repeat the same error several times.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to stumble over times tables is now recalling them more smoothly each week and even completed a new set without prompts during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
