Having empathy to relate with students as well as discipline. Especially discipline, to let students know that you have expectations for them and that they have to do their part whether it being assignments or pre-reading that you give, if they want to get better. I used to struggle in school for certain subjects, and had to have tutors as well.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be a reliable point of contact for a student to help address any questions or solidify any concepts the student may be having trouble with. A tutor should be able to work with a student at any point in their journey so they are able to enjoy the process of learning. My strengths are in being able to…

To nurture and help them grow as an individual not as a student. To encourage them even when they fail and to help them love the subject of interest instead of seeing it as a daunting task that they hate. I understand the requirements and needs to excel. I also employ a mindset to act as a friend/ peer to peer help instead of a domineering figure…

I believe that student's can generally pick up on whether a tutor is invested in them quite quickly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is actively show them that they do in fact want them, as an individual, to do better than they've ever done before and show interest in them as a person. I am very good at picking up on what…

Being patient when it comes to the student's pace of learning; different students learn at different rates, and some learn from different methods than others. Being patient, and figuring out what learning style best suits them is what I feel, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. Being timely in replying to student's queries or…

Apart from delivering a clear idea of what the student should know for school, a tutor should be able to cater to the learning needs of the student. A tutor should also act as a pillar of support and encourage the student when learning the subject may be difficult. A tutor should offer a safe environment where the student is allowed to make…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to find out the student's learning method and try to adapt to that. Everyone learns differently and tutoring should be focused on helping the student in the best possible way that they can receive. I can easily adapt to new situations and environments which will help since every…

The most important thing would be to help slowly build academic confidence for the student in the subject he/she struggles with, so that eventually he/she would no longer require help in this subject. However, skills like organization, time management, communication and focus can also be taught by a tutor to a student, which is highly essential…

A tutor should be able to teach a student how to learn. They shouldn't just coach students on what they are studying but also how they are studying - whether their mode of study is effective and efficient enough. So that in the end, the student is able to tackle any subject or obstacle they run into without a tutor. Being friendly and…

I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

Not all students learn the same or at the speed so it's important to be patient in teaching at all times. As a requirement to be able to teach college physics, I had to take a course in teaching etiquette where we were required to submit a teaching statement for our final grade. Inside CrawleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tanisha focused on trigonometric functions, specifically working through where and why she finds these challenging.

In Year 10, Chloe prepared for an upcoming Matrices test by tackling matrix operations and understanding adjacency matrices as used in different graph types.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sofia practised addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers along with revision of multiplication tables for improved number fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often avoided writing out steps when tackling equations, preferring to "solve in his mind"—this led to confusion and errors, especially as problems became more complex.

In Year 11 English, another student struggled with essay planning and left arguments underdeveloped; a tutor noted, "he needs more practice in forming concise points which support his argument."

Meanwhile, in Year 6 Maths, a student was quick to use the calculator before attempting questions independently. These habits resulted in lost marks or incomplete understanding during assessments, causing visible frustration and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Crawley tutor recently saw Chloe, a high school student, start making her own summary notes during lessons—she'd previously relied only on verbal explanations, but now refers back to her written notes when tackling practice problems in Matrices.

In another session, Gabriel, also in high school, showed a shift by recalling formulas for area and volume from memory without prompts; earlier sessions had him frequently pausing to check or ask for reminders.

Meanwhile, Flynn (Year 6) moved from needing step-by-step help with rearranging equations to working through hypotenuse problems independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
