I believe that while the teaching aspect of tutoring is exceptionally important, I also believe that supporting and motivating students when marks aren't exceptional is equally as important. This support means that even if students are feeling down, talking through the essay/assignment/exam and highlighting the positives as well as improvements…

In my opinion, a tutor should provide consistent and timely support for each student. By ensuring that they receive timely support, students will be able to review their mistakes earlier and get the support that they need. Consistent support is important to ensure student's progress over time so that they are building on top of their foundation…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to build both understanding and confidence, not just provide answers. A good tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel safe to ask questions and learn from their mistakes. It is also important to guide students toward independent thinking so they can solve problems on their own…

Build confidence and independence, not dependence. A good tutor doesn't just hand over answers they teach the student how to think through a problem, so that in the exam room, alone, the student can do it themselves. That means diagnosing the real gap (it's often two topics earlier than where the student thinks they're stuck), explaining it in…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence. A tutor isn’t just another teacher outside of school, but also someone who can guide and encourage like a life coach. By supporting them both academically and personally, students feel more motivated to learn and believe in themselves. I’m patient and make an…

Listening is the most important thing a tutor can do for the student. Tutors cannot understand a student's requirements and expectations until they effectively give time to the student for communicating the same. However, listening alone does not suffice. A tutor must act on these requirements and prepare custom learning plans. Being someone who…

Having empathy to relate with students as well as discipline. Especially discipline, to let students know that you have expectations for them and that they have to do their part whether it being assignments or pre-reading that you give, if they want to get better. I used to struggle in school for certain subjects, and had to have tutors as well.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be a reliable point of contact for a student to help address any questions or solidify any concepts the student may be having trouble with. A tutor should be able to work with a student at any point in their journey so they are able to enjoy the process of learning. My strengths are in being able to…

To nurture and help them grow as an individual not as a student. I believe that student's can generally pick up on whether a tutor is invested in them quite quickly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is actively show them that they do in fact want them, as an individual, to do better than they've ever done before and show interest in them as a person. I am very good at picking up on what…

Apart from delivering a clear idea of what the student should know for school, a tutor should be able to cater to the learning needs of the student. A tutor should also act as a pillar of support and encourage the student when learning the subject may be difficult. A tutor should offer a safe environment where the student is allowed to make…

Encouragement is the most important, but it must be coupled with good teaching. Inside CrawleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tanisha focused on trigonometric functions, specifically working through where and why she finds these challenging.

In Year 10, Chloe prepared for an upcoming Matrices test by tackling matrix operations and understanding adjacency matrices as used in different graph types.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sofia practised addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers along with revision of multiplication tables for improved number fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often avoided writing out steps when tackling equations, preferring to "solve in his mind"—this led to confusion and errors, especially as problems became more complex.

In Year 11 English, another student struggled with essay planning and left arguments underdeveloped; a tutor noted, "he needs more practice in forming concise points which support his argument."

Meanwhile, in Year 6 Maths, a student was quick to use the calculator before attempting questions independently. These habits resulted in lost marks or incomplete understanding during assessments, causing visible frustration and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Crawley tutor recently saw Chloe, a high school student, start making her own summary notes during lessons—she'd previously relied only on verbal explanations, but now refers back to her written notes when tackling practice problems in Matrices.

In another session, Gabriel, also in high school, showed a shift by recalling formulas for area and volume from memory without prompts; earlier sessions had him frequently pausing to check or ask for reminders.

Meanwhile, Flynn (Year 6) moved from needing step-by-step help with rearranging equations to working through hypotenuse problems independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
