Effective communication is essential. This includes being able to explain concepts clearly and in a way that is easy to understand and being a good listener. Additionally, the ability to empathize with students and understand their challenges and frustrations can make a big difference in how they respond to tutoring. Tutoring often involves…

First thing should be rapport building because it is very important to gain the trust and confidence of the student. Second would be establishing a set of routine so that the time in each session is used up efficiently. Lastly, tutors should effectively motivate students in achieving their goals as well as inspire them to improve each day. My…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student find and maintain their motivation and enthusiasm for learning. It is absolutely essential that a tutor review concepts, cover material, and ensure that a student is making progress, but is equally important for a tutor to make the learning experience positive for the student and…

Understanding self, and the acquisition of skill and knowledge are the most important things to give a student. Yes, the report card is an important ticket for students, and especially those in tutoring. But, all that knowledge will perish without use. The growth of the individual, who they are becoming through the process - a competent and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand and be there for them when they are struggling. Everyone has been in that position before, so I believe that a little patience and compassion go a long way. I believe that I am very understanding and patient when teaching. I know it can get frustrating for both the student and…

A tutor should be personable for each student they teach, they should give each student a genuine connection and understand the tendencies of each student. It is fundamental for a tutor to understand the methods that their students use to naturally gain an understanding; the tutor subsequently forges their approaches around this method. I have…

Inside Currumbin ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Bella worked on English worksheets focusing on sentence structure, homonyms, and onomatopoeia, and completed maths problems about telling time.

In Year 8, Willow practiced simplifying and converting fractions as well as adding and subtracting them using written problems for context.

Meanwhile, Year 10 Jeremy reviewed Pythagoras' theorem and measurement topics like area and volume to prepare for his semester exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 maths, one student often forgot to bring paper for calculations, which meant she couldn't complete area problems in-session and lost valuable practice time.

For a Year 8 English task, written responses were sometimes unstructured or lacked clear paragraphs—despite being shown examples, the habit of editing and planning answers was inconsistent ("I have given her examples and she will be able to develop her responses").

A senior student in Year 12 struggled to prepare targeted notes before sessions: "I tried to prepare for the basics... wasn't prepared for the in-depth exam questions." This left gaps during complex algebra and trigonometry revision.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Currumbin Valley noticed that a Year 9 student, Jeremy, now independently solves algebra and trigonometry problems—something he needed step-by-step help with just months ago.

In another recent session, Willow (Year 8) was able to convert and compare fractions accurately on her own after previously needing frequent reminders about the process.

Meanwhile, Bella in Year 6 has started proactively asking for homework herself and is catching more of her own grammar mistakes when reviewing written paragraphs—a shift from earlier sessions where she rarely checked her work without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elanora Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Currumbin Valley State School.
